Random Thoughts In Need Of Response
I think that today is a good day for random thoughts that may illicit response postively, negatively, with advice or nothing at all. Here’s hoping that it’s not the latter.
First, I’m thinking about a new tattoo. The one I have now is something that I thought about for al ong time. It’s a cross with waved lines at the top and bottom. I found it years ago as the second of three symbols in my name. I treated myself to it for my birthday when I was living in Ottawa and have never regretted the decision for a minute. Recently I’ve been noticing people’s tats and wondering if I should treat myself again.
I have ideas that I like a lot. Words this time, not a picture. Some ideas are lengthier than others. Some are more tempting than others. There’s also the issue of where I’d get etched. My current tattoo is at the base of my neck. Nice and centred as I like symmetry very much. I have one idea that would have something written sideways on my spine. Words on both sides sunning part o the length of my back. It would keep things centred and symmetrical and is a large/ long canvas. But I’m not sure. What do you think?
Next I’m looking at employment strategies and thoughts and opportunities. Do I have the chops to write? Is my passion for words and communication paired with my PR background enough to get me hired and succeed in the world of “New Marketing” and social media? And am I marketing myself properly? A lot of questions I know. But right now it’s urgent. I’ve been replying to ads with emails and dropping off resumes in more bulk than any time in my life, but have no solid results. (I’ve gone for 1 interview and just got off the phone with a marketing agency offering an internship with a very modest honorarium)
Today I called a temp agency for the first time and believe that it may be my best immediate hope. As I told my one interviewer (for bettor or worse), I’m not looking for work because I’m bored. I need to work. It’s not like I’m sitting on a trust fund. Rent needs to be paid.
I’ve been asking for leads and advice and info on Twitter and Facebook for some time now with little results. So now, I ask here. And while I don’t expect much, if you have any job tips for Toronto, please let me know.
Third thought, am I the only guy who wants to see Solomon Grundy in the next Batman movie? I know that he can’t be the star villain, but he’s been around in the comic books forever and he’s tough. I say put him in there. Don’t you want to see the Caped Crusader going toe to toe with a giant of a man, who has thick skin, bleeds tree sap and runs on nothing but anger and vengeance for a crime committed a hundred years ago? I do!
Fourth piece of business. I’m thinking of starting a blog for my sports minded pieces so that you all don’t have to ignore those posts here. I think it’s a fair idea and I might even be able to wrangle up some folks to write guest posts. But can we find a market? I don’t plan on posting pictures of women in skimpy clothing like the site I’ve previously posted for. And there are a million sports blogs online already. Can I bring something catchy and interesting to the party? Should I start a Twitter account that discusses sports related updates only to organize and relieve my non-sports friends? Let me know what you think. Whether you’re a die hard fan of pro sports like me or not I’m interested to see what you think.
Moving on. What has you excited for summer? With temperatures coming in the mid 20’s this weekend are you getting ready to camp, BBQ, swim, sit my the fire, mow the lawn, play with the garden, sit on the swings or get your bike out? Me, I’m a smells of summer guy. Freshly cut grass, hot dogs and baseball glove leather make me smile. There’s nothing better. Unfortunately, I don’t get to smell much grass in my neighbourhood. Oh well, that’s the price I pay for being a country boy in the city.
I think that’s all for today in the thoughts that I’m looking for feedback on.
I’m eager to see what kind of response you have to give on Facebook and Twitter and here in the comment section. I encourage comments here so that my Twitter and Facebook folks can mingle and such.
So here we go friends. I’m out for now. Keep smiling.

Joshie you can come visit me and mow my lawn! (that sounds dirty but I mean it in the cleanest way possible!)
I would love to see Solomon Grundy but it won’t happen. Christopher Nolan has said that he will stay away from the supernatural as much as possible…as for the tattoo, I’m all for it! I want to get another one too. Let me know if you need an artist, I can send some names your way.
Ok, well you solicited thoughts and ideas so here come a few your way. As for the tattoo, you have to have something with meaning for you. I the words “turkey face” on my wrist and everyone just laughs when they see it. Well it actually has a lot of meaning to me…not just some random script to draw a laugh. As for jobs, I understand where you are coming from. I was laid off from mine back in October and am now working two part time jobs to make ends meat (but that’s a whole story in itself). I do wish you the best of luck with your search! As for your idea of separating your blog, personally I come to see what your thoughts are regardless of the subject. You can write for my sports blog seeing as though I haven’t done it in three months. I call it writers block! On that note though, writing a sports blog would add another dimension to your overall character and with trying to break into social media I don’t think it would be a bad idea. Batman, no clue. I forget what summer is like….having been in southern Florida for the past two summers it all seems to blend together down here. But back when i was living in New Hampshire it was all about drinking by the bonfire, crickets chirping, early morning dew, swing sets, having wet grass stick to your toes, jumping off the bridge into the ice cold river, watching the sunset and sunrise all in one day, toasting marshmallows, and tubing, jet skiing on the pond at camp. Wow I think I wanna go home now…..
Tattoo
I’ve been thinking about a few new tattoos for awhile now. One is a number (I think 8) intertwined lilies that would go from my hip bone, up my ribs. The other is a slave bracelet on my wrist & hand. And thirdly I’ve had this whole theme of ‘bring true to myself’ going through my head the last 2 years and if I could find the right words to express it I’d get them tattooed on me as well. Anyways, I, like you, thought about my first tattoo for many years before I finally bought it for myself as my 25th birthday present and I would say if a tattoo has been on your mind as a recurring theme of late, then you’re clearly due for a new one. I like the idea of the words on either side of your spine – I thing it would sort of flow well with the cross at the base of you neck. Do it.
Job
I know nothing about the Toronto job market so I’m not sure I’ve got any helpful advice but if you’re background is in PR, and you love communications and writing and you are AN excellent conversationalist, might you not consider (if you haven’t already) looking into the provincial government? Those politicians need PR guys. Or perhaps, a job at a bank would work for you? I know it isn’t super exciting but it pays pretty well and is something steady i.e. no stress about not getting enough hours etc. Another suggestion is to apply at the Toronto hospitals. Hospitals are often looking for staff. I’d see you as a particularly great fit for the “porter” job. You spend your shift wandering the hospital floors, taking patients from their rooms to tests and back. This is physical, so you wouldn’t be at a desk all day and it involves significant people skills, which you have in spades. Also they pay pretty well.
Soloman Grundy
I love a good villain. I say YES! Though I don’t think I’m as invested in it as you are.
Sports blog
I’m not much of a sports fan, as you know. I like my hockey and otherwise I can pretty much live without. Having said that, I don’t skip over your sports posts on this blog when I’m here reading. They may not resonate with me as much as some of your other posts but I still enjoy reading them. If you create a 2nd blog, all about sports, I’ll probably go read it as well. Blogs for me aren’t so much about the content or subject matter but about the blogger’s style of writing. And I like yours so much.
Summer
My summer plans involve many road trips, Toronto, Niagara, North Bay, Montreal, all to visit friends and family. I’m also planning to attend Bonnaroo in Manchester Tennessee in June. I’ll take my usual week’s vacation in July for the Ottawa Bluesfest. Otherwise I intend to turn the side yard at Moe’s house into a veritable summer haven for us human folk – the dogs will be relegated to the backyard from now one and I will spend every weekend I can up at my lake, camping, music by the camp fire, canoeing, hiking through the forest. I can’t wait!!
