It Seems That I’ve Been Missing Out!
It came to my attention recently that there are a lot of things that people really dig that I’m not into at all. Not because I tried them and didn’t like them, but because I just never got into them from the very start.
So, I figured I’d make a little list and let you all know what I’m missing out on. If you really believe that I should be giving these things a shot, let me know. Make your arguments and I’ll keep them all in mind. Build off of each other’s comments and make me feel bad. I’m ready for it.
–Mad Men… I’m aware that this show has won all the awards that it has been nominated for. I know that Jon Hamm is a mega-star and uber-sexy and all that jazz. But I just never turned it on in season 1 and now I don’t want to jump in and try to figure it all out.
–True Blood… Again, a hugely popular TV show that has some of the most dedicated fans I’ve ever talked to. I know that there’s a lot more to it than just pretty Vampires, and that it isn’t teenage Twilight stories. But not even Anna Paquin’s breasts have been enough to make me tune in yet.
–Starbucks’ Pumpkin Spice Latte… I wrote about the Pumpkin Spice Latte being a sure sign that Autumn is upon us, but I’ve never had one. The coffee at work is free and the flavoured stuff at Starbucks isn’t. And when I do hit a Starbucks I’m very often a Grande Caramel Macchiato guy.
–Skinny Jeans… I’ve tweeted about this. I’m not the kind of guy that feels like he can rock skinny jeans. I’ve been asked about it. I’ve been asked to try it. I’m opposed to the idea. I feel that I have large thighs (which hold much power) and that sticking me in skinny jeans would look rather ridiculous. Also, I walk, a lot, and I don’t see how I would be comfortable as I strolled down the street at my regular quick pace.
–Dexter… I know there seem to be a lot of TV shows on this list, but apparently these are some of the biggest shows on the planet right now. I’ve heard nothing but good things about Dexter from people that I love and trust, so I don’t doubt that it’s a fantastic show. However, I’m so far behind now that I’m going to need a week’s vacation and some DVDs.
–Vampires… This kind of goes along with the whole True Blood thing I guess. But there hasn’t been anything Vampire related that has made me get excited. Maybe that’s on me. Maybe I’ve been looking at it all wrong. Either way, I haven’t been hyped for anything with Vamps since Ryan Reynolds and Jessica Biel were in Blade Trinity.
–MGMT… Please don’t shoot me. I know that I am way behind the times here. In my defense though I really only listen to country and show tunes and whatever Glee records these days. There’s just so much out there and I only have so much time. I understand that Kids is supposedly the greatest song recorded in the last 10 years, I’m sorry.
–Jersey Shore… I promise that this is the last TV show on the list. But I don’t see this as just a TV show, it’s a fucking societal epidemic. “The Situation” will gross $5 million this year from MTV, CBS and various endorsements. That’s crazy. I could GTL all the time for that kind of money!
–Gin… Apparently Gin is making a huge comeback with folks my age. I have no idea how that started. I imagine there was a great marketing campaign that I didn’t pay attention to. There was nickname for Lemon Gin & 7up when I was younger, but I can’t remember it now. I’ll stick to Molson Stock Ale or rum and anything though.
So there you have it, a list of things that I’ve blissfully ignored long enough that now I’m writing about them. I see something about all of these things on my Twitter feed every week, some every day, and I’m not complaining. It is part of what I love about Twitter. But I won’t be able to participate in any of your discussions.
Let me know when you want to talk about Veronica Mars, country music, sports or Disney flicks though. I’ll be all in!

Mad Men is completely worth it, but go back and start at season 1.
Can I also just say that it’s really mean to bold something like “Anna Paquin’s breasts” and not provide so much as a link? Really, man…
sorry man… next time I’ll have something good attached to the bolded words… I promise!
hope and change
We’ve discussed Mad Men more than once. You may not enjoy it for the reasons I do but I do think you would enjoy it. Start at the beginning though.
It seems that Mad Men is the one thing that most people feel the strongest about… hmmm… who has DVDs that they want to lend me?
