Movember Journal 2011 – Day 3 – #Movember Is Here!

Movember is here!

I’ve waited a long 12 months to be able to say that. And to be able to justify growing a mustache.

Of course the pay off is that as a world wide group we Mo Bros and Mo Sistas are raising money and awareness in the fight against men’s cancers.

So far my soup strainer has been coming in slowly. I’ve been shaving my chin and cheeks before bed and checking them again in the morning so I can try to maximize the contrast in colour if nothing else.

As I sit here and write this I can tell you that the official number of registered Movember participants around the world has reached 572,119. That’s an awesome number. I can also tell you that as of approximately 6:30 pm on November 3rd there has been $14,452,486 raised to help kick cancer in the nuts.

I really love Movember. This is my 3rd year participating in the lip sweater growth and as the years have passed I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the feeling of partnership and community between dudes with ‘staches. You can see it in the nods on the street come mid-Movember when it’s easy to tell who is participating. It’s there in the fundraisers (Challenge Karaoke – Movember 2011, stay tuned for details) that teams put together. And it’s expressed in the congratulations and encouragement from friends, family, co-workers and strangers as the month goes on.

Side Note: Special thanks goes to the boys and girls who love the boys with the mustaches. We realize that you know it’s for a good cause. But that doesn’t mean that we’re attractive. Thank you for supporting us and kissing us.

Now, because this is a fundraiser I am required to make my pitch. I know that I have friends and family spread all over the place – and some of you may even read this blog. If you do happen to be reading this I am asking that you make a donation to my face. I don’t think there’s one of us that hasn’t felt hate for cancer… and what better opportunity to donate and make a differnce?!

Hop on over to my MoSpace and see photo updates, status changes, donations and shout outs and more all month long. It is my official Movember Headquarters and I’ll be updating frequently.

Side Note: This year’s team has been named The Whittskers after former Toronto Blue Jays’ catcher and current Team Canada baseball coach, Ernie Whitt. Ernie, like many big leaguers in the 80’s, had a pretty great mustache and we hope to honor him with ours.

While I am angling for donations for myself and our team, I really just want to get the word out there. If you know a Mo Bro or Mo Sista who is doing their best to be active and make a difference consider donating to them too… right after you get me.

Thanks for being awesome kids – Happy Movember!
