Vince Young Finally Signs With The Buffalo Bills – 14 Months Later
Remember that time I used to write for a sports site…
The one with the videos and the pictures and blog and tweets and such.
Well yesterday that all came flooding back to me when Vince Young signed his 1 year, 2 million dollar deal to back-up Ryan Fitzpatrick for the Buffalo Bills.
Technically he will be competing with Tyler Thigpen and Brad Smith, but I’m pretty sure that if VY shows up in shape and ready to earn his cash (plus the 1 million extra dollars he can get to) and maybe even make a difference on the field in some key situations.
For all the trouble that Young has had keeping a job in the last couple of seasons he’s still got the tools that he needs. He’s put up 8,964 yards in the air and 1,459 yards on the ground. He could bring the Bills a whole new look in special offensive packages.
It might be fun to watch.
It could win games.
Anyway, back to the stuff that came flooding back…
It turns out that on January 6, 2011 when VY was released from the Titans I wrote that he should go to Buffalo and play for the Bills.
And now – 1 year, 4 months and 5 days later – VY has signed with the Bills. Finally.
Check it out.
The Titans have decided that it’s time to let Vince Young walk away. He’s gone. No more snaps as the QB of the Tennessee Titans. And now the question becomes where will VY land next?
As a Cowboys fan I’d love to see him come into Dallas and start the season as the back-up before taking over for a struggling Tony Romo and leading the team to a 11-5 record and a playoff berth. But honestly I don’t see that happening.
What I do think could work is a move to Buffalo. The Bills need a QB. I know that Ryan Fitzpatrick was pretty good after he took over the team this year. And the ladies love his beard. But in the end there aren’t that many people who will tell you that he’s the guy that they want to move forward with in the rebuilding process.
Vince Young though has all the tools to be a franchise guy. He just needs to get his head back on straight. Maybe Buffalo is a place where that could happen. I mean, what trouble could he get into playing in Buffalo?
The media pressure will be pretty minimal once the new QB smell is gone. The weather is cold so he can bundle up and stay in his condo when he’s not working. The team just has to concentrate on keeping him calm and focused and Zen. That Vince Young is capable of winning some of those close games that this year’s team wasn’t able to come through on.
Will the Bills go after VY, I don’t know. I can’t answer for them. They don’t pay me to make those kinds of decisions. But I think it’s a valid idea that needs to be discussed in the head office.
It may be a long shot, but don’t be surprised to see number 10 taking snaps at Ralph Wilson Stadium next season.
