The 2012 NHL Lockout Survival Guide – November Edition

Hey there friends. It’s been about a month and a half since I wrote the 2012 NHL Lockout Survival Guide on Day 1 of this unhappy time for hockey fans.

And now that we have had the official announcement that all NHL games have been cancelled through November 30, I think it may be time for a Part 2 to the survival guide.

So, let’s take a look at some of the things that you can do to pass the time in November as we hope/pray/wish/ that there may be some sort of resolution to this whole CBA situation.

Celebrate American Thanksgiving:
In Canada we’ve already had our Thanksgiving. But in the good old US of A, it’s just right around the corner. So, make some plans with friends and family for the weekend surrounding November 22 and have some fun. Take a day off work and make it a long weekend. And if you feel so inclined, turn on the TV and watch NFL football. It’s an awesome tradition that should be honoured with beer and finger foods.

Start Your Holiday Shopping:
The keeners out there have probably already got a closet full of gifts ready to be wrapped and handed out to loved ones this winter. But the rest of us still need to get out to the malls and figure out what the heck we’re giving our parents this year. I suggest taking some of the downtime you’re dealing with and getting that job started. As an added bonus there is probably a little extra cash in your November budget since you won’t be buying NHL tickets or watching games at the bar with friends.

Enjoy Discount Halloween Candy:
That’s right, next week is Halloween and the day after is not only November 1, it’s also the day when all of the Halloween candy goes on sale. Take some of that hockey cash, buy some goodies and treat yo’self! While I do not recommend a diet that consists purely of Halloween candy, I very much endorse a little indulging. Moderation is the key – go get it!

Check Out The NBA Regular Season:
Basketball is back and the regular season tips-off at the start of the month. So why not check out some jump shots and dunks on the hard court? I know it’s not hockey and that’s true. But this all or nothing philosophy when it comes to sports just doesn’t compute with me. There will be winning and losing and rivalry and upsets and drama and that’s what is awesome about all sports. Give it a shot. If nothing else we can all hate the Heat together.

Grow A Moustache:
Movember is coming. That’s right, the time of year when men all over the world shave off the beard and grow back the ‘stache. I know that a lot of us who participate don’t necessarily look dashing during the month, but it’s for a good cause and it’s a good time. Take a moment to celebrate the month by congratulating a MoBro on his progress. Donate to your fav Moustache Farmer or team. And, if you’re in Toronto on November 29, come on down to Lou Dawgs on King Street West for Movember Challenge Karaoke Toronto. It’s always a good time and we’d love to have you come out and join us for a party.

There you go kids. 5 things that you can try to do in November as we cope with the lack of NHL puck. And, remember that your local junior teams and AHL affiliates would love to see you in the stands when they take the ice.

Enjoy the month. It’s better than sitting at home and sulking.
