Toronto’s New Year’s Resolutions!

Toronto New Years Fireworks2014 is here, and while I am not personally making any New Year’s Resolutions… I do think that the people of Toronto should resolve to do a few things this year that will benefit all of us.

I’m not trying to be preachy here, but come on, this list is going to be easy to implement, makes sense for the greater good, and will make Toronto a more pleasant place to be for the next 12 months.

Be careful crossing the street
I know I’m not your mother, and I shouldn’t need to tell you this… but given the number of unfortunate and unnecessary accidents that have happened in Toronto this year I really feel like I have to ask you all to please be careful when you are crossing the street.

Just take a second to look both ways and wait for the lights and use the crosswalks. Please. Thank you.

Cheer for a local team
I know that there are a lot of people that aren’t into sports. That’s fine. But I am, so this resolution comes from me to you. There’s something really awesome about being part of a community of sports fans. Even as a fringe fan it can be really cool to sit in a bar and watch a game and cheer when the home team scores and wins.

You’ve got your choice of the Blue Jays, Raptors, Argos, TFC, Marlies… hell, even the Maple Leafs.

There’s a chance that some of those teams could make the playoffs. And that would be something pretty special in this city.

Be nice to each other
I’m from a small town where people aren’t perfect, but they smile and nod and wave and hold doors for each other.

It would be really cool if we could get some more of that in Toronto. Smiling and saying hello to strangers isn’t creepy. Holding the door for someone doesn’t take any real effort. Moving to the back of the bus, not blocking a busy walkway, and generally just being courteous to the people you meet will help make the whole year better.

Vote
This is going to be the most important resolution of the year. On October 27, 2014 the citizens of Toronto will go to the polls for the municipal elections. I don’t need to tell you how big this is going to be. There’s a lot riding on this election when it comes to the direction and perception of our city.

I’m not going to sit here and tell you who to vote for, or who not to vote for. Heck, we don’t even know who is going to be on the ballot yet.

But I am going to tell you that you need to get out there and vote. And you need to talk about the issues with your friends and neighbours and co-workers and loved ones. You need to make sure that you know what is going on and what you can do to usher in the kind of Toronto that you want to live in.

Be awesome.
I’m not going to tell you how to be awesome. You already know how to do that. I just wanted to remind you to keep up the good work.

Toronto is a great city because of the people who live here. And those people, you included, are awesome!

Have a safe, happy, prosperous 2014 kids. You deserve it!
