Pistology: Small Town Pistols Album Review

2

Small Town Pistols Red Carpet CMAO Awards 2015-3686Fresh off 3 wins at the Country Music Association of Ontario Awards it would be easy to say that Amanda and Tyler Wilkinson are hotter than a two dollar pistol…

With I Only Smoke When I Drink becoming a favourite with fans and the country music community (wins for Single of the Year, Video of the Year, and Songwriters of the Year at the CMAOs did a good job of proving that) and a 2014 CCMA Award for Group or Duo of the Year, there has been some healthy anticipation for the new album from the Small Town Pistols.

And now the wait is finally over! On May 26th the world was introduced to Pistology, the duo’s 2nd full length album since coming back together to make country music.

I Only Smoke When I Drink felt like an outlier when we first heard it. Something different than what we heard with Colour Blind, or Amanda and Tyler’s work as The Wilkinsons. But that’s not the case. This is the not an exception, it’s the new rule. Pistology introduces us to a new sound from the duo. New songs that tell stories, feature both of the artists’ voices, and feel like they’re the result of a new creative freedom and confidence from a pair of singers and songwriters who have been doing this for more than half their lives.

The 2nd single from Pistology, Can’t Wait To Meet You, is currently climbing the Canadian Country Charts, and the video is making the rounds online and on CMT. Watch it at the bottom of this post if you haven’t seen it yet.

This is a strong album full of songs that will play well live as well as in a playlist.

Since we’re sometimes in the business of making predictions and guesses about things, I’m going to go ahead and pick Be Your Own Song and The Other Man as potential 3rd and 4th singles from Pistology.

It’s not that all 11 tracks aren’t strong, we already said they are (and we believe it), but sometimes you have to get picky. And my gut tells me that the over/under for singles from this record should be set as 5. And if you twisted my arm and made me pick the 5th single, I’d pick My Family.

Right or wrong though, we’re excited to hear a bunch of these songs live at Boots & Hearts this summer when Amanda and Tyler bring their talent to the stage in Burl’s Creek. We’ve been waiting since year 1 to see Small Town Pistols in the lineup, and you can bet that we’re not going to miss it.

The Takeaway

Small Town Pistols Performance CMAO Awards 2015-3889Pistology sounds like the continuation of growth in Amanda and Tyler Wilkinson. They’ve come a long way from 26 Cents and Jimmy’s Got A Girlfriend – and while we hope they still love those songs as much as we do – this is the new normal. This is the Small Town Pistols sound right now. And they haven’t missed a beat.

Good on ’em. We’re in.
