Get Me There – Shawn Austin Interview & 5 Quick Questions

Shawn Austin at SiriusXM Toronto Headquarters 1

Shawn Austin’s career is on the upswing, and the Vancouver country singer is ready to take full advantage of every opportunity he has to take things to the next level.

We caught up with the Paradise Found singer at the SiriusXM offices in Toronto to talk about his latest single, Get Me There, as well as his current run of shows opening for High Valley, new music and more.

Coming off of a guest spot on Dallas Smith’s 2017 Side Effects Tour, and shows with Chris Lane earlier this year, Austin has a sense now for what it is to be on the road and on stage every night in a new town. We asked him about the process, and while it wasn’t glamorous, it was legit. Shawn told us that the key for him (and many others) is doing everything you can to stay healthy and ready to go. That means getting sleep, working out, eating right… and while that doesn’t mean never having a good time on the road, it means not going crazy.

The High Valley run is a short one for Austin, with seven shows across Ontario. But there’s a lot more to do this year after that.

Shawn told us that he’s ready for a busy summer that will include getting on stage in front of country music lovers to share his songs and earn some new fans. And when he’s not on the road, he’s committed to being in the studio to work on his new EP, that he hopes to have ready to release at the end of summer 2018.

New music is something that we’ve been excited about from Shawn since we spoke with him last October and he told us there was something in the works. And, if the rest of the songs on his upcoming EP are as solid as Paradise Found and Get Me There, there are going to be a lot of ears on this record.

As we talked to Shawn about making music and being on the road, and even during our round of 5 Quick Questions, one thing became abundantly clear…

Shawn Austin is humble.

It’s a common adjective for country singers, but it truly shines through when talking to Austin. When he talks about his career, he consistently uses if. If he has the chance to record a duet with another singer, if he has the chance to play his dream venue, if he has the chance to take a dream vacation, he’s coming into every step of his career without the assumption that he’ll be given anything or the feeling that he deserves to be given anything.

And while he may be grounded and humble, he’s also ready for a laugh.

We asked Shawn about the SiriusXM Top Of The Country contest, where he’s been placed as one of nine semi-finalists (joining Leaving Thomas and Kristin Carter in the West region), and he was excited to talk about it. The smile on his face when he talked about going into Bryan Adams’ Warehouse Studios in Vancouver was amazing. The way he talked about the chance to be there, in a space that he didn’t know if he’d ever get to, was special.

But the laughs came next.

Shawn’s friend, and fellow Canadian country music emerging star, Andrew Hyatt is one of the three semi-finalists in the Central region, so we had to ask about any trash talk. While Shawn told us that it hasn’t happened yet, he’s pretty sure it will get there. And even if he didn’t tell us what that trash talk will sound like, his laugh made us wish we could be in on it.

There’s a lot coming up for Shawn Austin to look forward to in his country music career. With a Top 10 single (Paradise Found) already under his belt, new music on the way, the SiriusXM Top Of The Country contest in motion, and experience on stages from coast-to-coast being added to his resume – he’s getting there.

Be ready; he’s coming – there’s no if about it.
