Love A Girl – Tebey Album Review and Q&A

1

Nearly two years after the release of his last EP, Old School, Tebey is back with six songs on his new release, Love A Girl.

The Peterborough, ON native, has crafted himself a growing reputation as a singer and a songwriter, putting his own singles on the Canadian country charts consistently, while also celebrating the high of writing the #1 country song on the US country charts (Justin Moore: Somebody Else Will). And while country fans may know him from those accomplishments, Tebey isn’t country only when it comes to this artistry and songwriting.

On Love A Girl, Tebey takes those country and pop sensibilities and merges them seamlessly to create a collection of songs that work.

The lead single, Denim On Denim sounds like it could be a Keith Urban jam, fitting in perfectly with the new country sound that fans are eating up. And as the EP flows through the rest of the tracks, the lyrics (as solid as ever, and exactly the high quality that we’d expect from Tebey) work well with the guitars, rhythm, and production that they’re paired with.

Tebey took some chances on this record. It isn’t straight-ahead classic country. It might not be what some people expected. But it’s very clearly the EP that he wanted to make.

We caught up with Tebey for a Q&A to ask about his songwriting and the new music on Love A Girl and he told us that these songs came after some much deserved time to recharge, let his artistic juices get flowing, and experiment musically.

It worked.

Our first introduction to Tebey came in 2012 at Boots & Hearts where he became the first winner of the Emerging Artist Showcase. In the time since then, he’s released two full-length albums and two EPs, landed eight singles in the Top 20 on the Canadian country charts, had great success as a songwriter and toured from coast-to-coast playing his songs for Canadian country music fans. Not bad.

These new songs will only add more fuel to his setlist when he gets up on stage, and having seen the reaction that audiences give his live performances, we know that they’ll work there too.

Love A Girl Q&A with Tebey

Q. You took some time between the Old School EP and the new music coming
now on Love A Girl… why was it important to you to take that time before coming back to
new music?

A. We had just wrapped the Coors Banquet First Come, First Served Tour and I was feeling really worn out. I needed some time for myself and to get the creative juices flowing again. I also wanted to experiment musically and needed time to do that.

Q. Is there anything new that you wanted to try or accomplish with the
music for the new EP?

A. I always try to push the envelope at least a little. Whether it’s lyrically, melodically or with the song’s production.

Q. Is there a difference when you find yourself sitting down to write
songs for your own album and when you’re writing non-specifically?

A. I don’t necessarily sit down to write for myself. As a general rule I just try to write the best songs I can. Then once I’ve got a few songs that I love, I’ll start to look at which ones could work for me.

Q. As a songwriter you’re not just a country music guy. Aside from the
professional opportunities that brings, do you see it as an advantage or
benefit when you are sitting down to write country songs?

A. I definitely think it’s an advantage. Writing in different genres of music helps me find melodies that are ‘outside the box’, or melodies that you wouldn’t necessarily expect to hear in country music. Hopefully that sets my songs apart.

Q. You’ve been writing songs since you were 9 years old… what do you
think it is about the process and result that has kept you on that path?

A. Writing songs is tough. Writing hit songs is even tougher. But I love that moment in a writing session when I realize I’ve got something special. That feeling is the reason I continue to write songs.

Q. In a few words, what can you tell fans about the new music and what
else is coming next from you?

A. I want the fans to know how much I truly appreciate them spending their hard earned money to buy the music, stream the music and come to the shows. Without them, making music for a living wouldn’t really be possible.
