Promises – Alexis Lynn Interview and 5 Quick Questions
Alexis Lynn is just starting her career in music, but already she’s been able to check off some pretty exciting items from her to-do list. The British Columbia native has released her debut single, Promises, and is ready to share it with the world.
We caught up with Alexis in Toronto to talk about the single, the process, and what’s coming next, and as we sat downtown, we started to see and understand how excited she is to make it all happen.
Promises was recorded and produced in split sessions. The track was recorded in Los Angeles, with Alexis’s vocals coming after that in Vancouver at Hipposonic Studios (at Fader Mountain Sound). She told us there were times when the process was challenging, but that in the end, she loves what they were able to do, and she knows more now about what it takes than she did before. But before all of that, there was the song.
We first saw Alexis Lynn in November 2017 in Toronto during Indie Week. She played as part of the M88 Entertainment Group Showcase, and closed her set that night with Promises. At the time we wrote that the song closed things out with style. And we stand by that. As it turns out, her team thought the same thing, because during our interview we learned that it was that night they decided to make it the lead single.
And now, the single is here. Alexis has played her single release party in Surrey, the track is on Spotify, and the official lyric video has been launched on YouTube. She’s doing all of the things she needs to do with media to get the word out… but it’s not all she’s thinking about.
Alexis and her team are already planning the next studio sessions that will produce her second single in the next few months, and then her debut EP (hopefully) before the end of the year. She has songs like she had Promises, but we don’t know which tracks are planned for the release. We know that she’s excited by the process of creating the songs, writing, working out the kinks, and sharing them. And because of all that, we’re sure that we’re going to be wowed when we hear it.
We asked Alexis if there were any dream collaborations that may not happen on this album, but that she’d love to make happen in the future. She smiled when names like Rihanna and Khalid crossed her lips, as though she was imagining it as she said it. And when we mentioned her influence by Alicia Keys, we had a laugh together when she suggested that a three-woman band of Rihanna, Keys, and Alexis be formed.
There are a lot more firsts on the horizon for Alexis Lynn. She wants to go to New York to visit and work. She has an EP to release, more music to write, and more shows to play. But for now, the most important first is Promises. It’s her introduction to the world, and we suggest that the world should be listening.
