Pieces – Drake White EP Review and Q&A
It didn’t take long for country music fans to fall in love with Drake White’s debut album, Spark, in 2016 – and now they’re falling all over again with the release of five new tracks on his EP, Pieces.
The year and a half between releases has felt longer at times, but only because we’ve been excited at the prospect of more music from the Hokes Bluff, Alabama native. The good news is, the wait is over and fans have been listening to Drake White’s new music with smiles on their faces.
Girl In Pieces, the EP’s lead track, already has more than 200,000 spins on Spotify, and in just over a week, the lyric video has more than 20,000 plays as well. It’s exactly the kind of catchy, smooth, easy going and lovely tune we’d expect from the Alabama boy turned Nashville star. It’s also the perfect lead into the new music on Pieces.
In the past, we’ve described Drake White’s energy on stage as kind of hippie with a country twang, and while we don’t know if there was incense burning in the studio while he was recording these songs, we can imagine that there was. The laid-back, easy going, melodies flow from start to finish on the EP and are the perfect fit to White’s live show. It’s a synchronicity that will allow fans to enjoy Girl In Pieces, Grandpa’s Farm, Happy Place, Nothing Good Happens After Midnight, and The Best Is Yet To Come at live shows, just like they will on the album.
We caught up with Drake White for a quick Q&A to talk about the new music, what he was feeling when he put this collection of songs together and coming back soon to play in Canada.
Thanks to DW for taking the time to answer our questions, we appreciate it – and we’ll keep hitting play on Pieces when we’re looking for some country music to relax and groove to.
Check Drake’s answers and hit play on the stream of Pieces now. Enjoy!
Drake White, Pieces Q&A
Q) How would describe the feeling of having the 5 songs on Pieces out to the world and shared with your fans?
DW) It always feels good to serve the fans. When I get to create music and folks enjoy it, it gives me a great sense of fulfilment.
Q) When you were working on the songs and putting together this EP did you have any specific goals in mind?
DW) I think my goal was and always is to follow my creative bliss, push boundaries, and create something that makes my friends, family and band proud.
Q) Did you feel any pressure in following up Spark with the way fans accepted and reacted to those songs?
DW) No. I just want to make music forever. It’s not rocket science, it’s just music. The pressure was from it taking it so long to get something new to the fans.
Q) You’ve earned a reputation for being one of the best on-stage performers in country music right now, how does it feel to have new songs to add to your set that you know fans will be able to sing along to?
DW) I’m stoked! These are some of the best songs melodically I have recorded. Great melodies make for great live moments.
Q) We just saw you with Kip Moore a little while ago (and there are still a few dates left out west), but can you tell us if there are plans in the works to come back to play in Canada again soon?
DW) It is my intention to continue to serve our Canadian fans throughout our career. I’ll always go where the fans are and where the music takes us. As long as there are people that want to hear our music in Canada, we will play in Canada.
