Asking For A Friend, Devin Dawson at Boots & Hearts 2018
Devin Dawson’s star is on the rise, and at Boots & Hearts 2018, he took over the Front Porch Stage during the Coors Banquet Kickoff Party and gave ‘em all a show!
The California-turned-Tennessee singer/songwriter looked right at home on his first Canadian stage. He got a big reaction out of the crowd as he came out to centre stage to start the show. And those Canadian fans stayed loud for him until he left the stage at the end of the set.
Dawson and the band ripped through a solid set of eight songs, all from his debut album, Dark Horse (January 2018). Included in the set were his first Top 10, All On Me, and his new single, Asking For A Friend. And as both of those songs played, we could see and hear the crowd singing along with him.
As the set rolled on, it became very clear that they hype surrounding Devin Dawson is legit. He’s earned it.
Dawson’s got a big voice (that would sound absolutely perfect alongside Shawn Mendes on a duet or collaboration) that was clear and strong in the middle of the Thursday night party. He brought a welcome energy, working to show his first crowd north of the border that he’s for real, and that he’s got a lot to offer them now and down the road.
Before his set ended, when it was time for one last song, Devin Dawson told the crowd that he knew that he wasn’t supposed to end the set with a slow song. But, he added, he’s never been much for following the rules. With that, he broke into Dark Horse, the title track of his album and showed off that voice of his one more time in a powerful and straight ahead way.
My heart bleeds for country music / Where the honest outlaw truth is / No, I ain’t no white knight / I’m a little more / Dark horse
