Pierre Lapointe at FME 2018, Ton Corps est Déjà Froid
Pierre Lapointe is a straight up celebrity in Quebec. The singer-songwriter has been releasing music since 2002, but it wasn’t until he appeared on La Voix (The Voice) that celebrity became a thing for him.
In our experience, Canadians are pretty great at giving people their space. But Lapointe told us that going to the grocery store is not the same as it used to be. Not that he was complaining.
We caught up Pierre, Philippe Brault, and José Major at the gorgeous Sol Mineur during FME 2018 for a roundtable interview. With over 15 years in the music business, Pierre was a consummate professional. He was kind and generous with his responses and the energy in the room was one of openness. The interview was conducted in English, and although Lapointe has only recently learned the language, he was eloquent and thoughtful in his responses.
Ton Corps est Déjà Froid (Your Body is Already Cold – August 2018) is the latest release from Pierre Lapointe, and he’s joined forces with Philippe Brault on bass, Nicolas Basque (Plants Animals) and Vincent Legault (Dear Criminals) on guitars and José Major on drums for this rock project. The band is a super-group and go by the name Les Beaux Sans-Cœur which translates to The Beautiful Heartless.
The album was co-written with Philippe and came together very quickly. The album takes a very different direction, and it embodies a 60’s pop/rock, garage band feel. It’s fun and it’s simple. The pair have been working together for over 15 years, and when they came together for this project, it was with no pressure and no expectations. You can feel that they “get” each other and we can imagine that it’s nice to not have to explain yourself in the creative process. To just be able to run with it. We love how it turned out.
“The goal was just to keep the fun.”
On Friday night (August 31), we made our way to Le Petit Théâtre du Vieux Noranda just before midnight. It’s a gorgeous little theatre with great ambience and beautiful sound. There was a lineup to get in, and the venue was full. We headed to the stage, and made it just before the set began. Les Beaux Sans-Cœur opened the set with the final track from the album, an instrumental called Countdown. It was energetic and built the suspense. When Pierre took the stage, there was an increase in that energy and the audience responded in kind.
Rock frontman may be a new role for Pierre, a role which requires a lot of things. We think he’s got it.
