Xylaroo – Like Planes 5 Quick Questions
Together, UK based sisters Coco and Holly Chant are Xylaroo.
Originally from Papua New Guinea and now based in East London, UK, the pair were signed to indie label Sunday Best in 2015, and released their debut album Sweetooth to glowing accolades in 2016. Last year they released their first independent single, Yesterdays.
They’ve just released Like Planes, their second indie single, and it was the catalyst for this post.
Like Planes may sound a touch familiar because Coco and Holly are known for blending sounds from ’90s indie-pop bands like Modest Mouse, Rilo Kiley, Whispertown 2000 and more. The singers have also stated that Leonard Cohen has influenced the pair considerably.
Like Planes was written after Coco and Holly heard about a friend struggling with the death of a loved one to cancer. Her friend didn’t have a family of their own, so they spent their last few weeks together.
“The beautiful and happy times that make it all worth it in the end can cut through sadness like diamonds and we need them in the worst of times. Like Planes reminds us that even in our darkest moments, there are things that can bring us joy.”
They’ve supported MIKA, Frank Turner and the Sleeping Souls and PUP on tour. Xylaroo’s sound is pop-folk and with super catchy melodies and sweet, sweet harmonies that seem only to happen when family members sing together.
