Dallas Smith, Timeless Album Review

Dallas Smith‘s fourth full-length album, Timeless is officially here for country music fans. The album is 12 tracks long, includes two songs with great features, and has five singles (Make ‘Em Like You, Rhinestone World, Drop, Timeless, Like A Man) that have already reached #1 on the Canadian country music charts.

When Like A Man reached the top of the charts in mid-August, Smith claimed his tenth chart-topper, his ninth in a row, and extended a run of hits that doesn’t look like it’s stopping any time soon. It’s the kind of stretch that even Shania Twain didn’t have (though Dallas is still behind Shania’s 13 total #1s) and it should be applauded and celebrated as it continues.

From the top of the album to the bottom, Dallas gives fans more of what they love from him. It’s a continuation of the connection that’s been there since his debut in 2011, and even more so, the completion of the The Fall EP from spring 2019. Smith is a giant star in the genre in Canada, with award wins and sold-out shows and lots of love – and Timeless is what’s next in that relationship.

Dallas Smith – Like A Man

The album starts with back-to-back numbers ones, Drop and Timeless that fans will know from The Fall, before it shifts into new songs. And bang, what a way to get into it with HARDY joining Smith on Some Things Never Change (not a Frozen II cover).

The pair come together for a fun one that’ll hit smalltown-hometown listeners right in the “yep, you got me”‘s. It’s uptempo and celebrates the little things that you can count on (for better or worse) when you come from someplace that isn’t the big city, or necessarily up to date. But more than the surroundings, it’s about the people and the ones we know who are who they are and aren’t changing. “We still light one up, we still raise some hell, we still show up drunk to something thinking you can’t tell. Keep a chain tucked in our truck bed ’cause we’re all stuck in our ways, we’re living proof that some things never change…”

When the dance floors open back up in the bars and honky-tonks, they’re going to be busy when Some Things Never Change comes on. AND if we were going to make predictions (with zero inside information), we’d tell you that we wouldn’t be surprised to see HARDY on a Dallas tour in the future. Hopefully. Because that would be fun.

The new music continues with Don’t Need The Whiskey, slides into Like A Man, and then back into another new one with Damn Sun.

What Dallas Smith shows with ease is that he can go from speedy to slow, own both of them, and deliver a song that fans are going to want to latch onto. At this point in his career, he knows what can do with a song, and on Timeless he goes out and does it on each of the tracks.

The run-time is just shy of 40 minutes but goes quickly because of the familiarity of the songs we already know. It’s actually a really cool wrinkle in the album, with a half/half split between new listens and previously available tracks. We get the full album listening experience that we love so much, but with songs that we already know we love.

Heck, if you liked any of the songs from The Fall, but for whatever reason, you didn’t make the purchase, now is the time to go ahead and do it and pick up all of them, plus the new stuff on Timeless.

By the time we get to Friends Don’t Let Friends Drink Alone at track 11, we’re in full-on sing-along mode, grooving to Smith’s parts and MacKenzie Porter and Dean Brody’s parts too. And it makes us wish we could turn back the clock for a minute and go back to Budweiser Stage in when the Friends Don’t Let Friends Tour stopped in Toronto last summer. That was a good time.

Dallas Smith’s career has seen him climb the rock and country music mountains successfully. He’s a star who relates to and connects with his fans on a regular basis. He’s hands-on behind-the-scenes in a lot of ways. And he’s one hell of a singer. Nobody in Canadian country music can claim to have the same chart success as Dallas Smith since he debuted in the country genre. And that all continues today with Timeless.
