Madisyn Gifford Releases Debut EP, Learning To Exist

Madisyn Gifford Learning To Exist EP

Emerging Canadian pop singer-songwriter Madisyn Gifford is here with her debut EP, Learning To Exist – and she’s ready for you.

The seven-song EP includes previously released singles, Without You, Voulez-Vous, and Shapes and Shadows to go along with the four new songs for folks to dive into. The whole thing clocks in at about 27 minutes. And ya, we wish there were 12 tracks and a 45-minute run time, but that’s just us being greedy.

If you haven’t heard any of Madisyn’s music yet, or if you have and you’re ready for the new stuff, we recommend hitting play on the lyric video for Black Coffee now and jumping into Learning To Exist.

Madisyn Gifford – Black Coffee

In talking about Learning To Exist, Madisyn says, “My EP consists of seven songs that I wrote over the course of two years (ages 17-19); all about moving in and out of interpersonal relationships and the feelings that surround moving from adolescence into young adulthood. Each song holds such a special place in my heart because I quite literally wrote them in an effort to learn how to exist as a young adult and also get my footing as an artist. This body of work feels like it has been such a long time coming and so much love was put into it, I am beyond excited to share these songs with the world!”

We had a chance to talk to Madisyn earlier in the year, and we talked a lot about writing and what’s important to her. She told us then that these were songs that she’d written in the recent past, and was excited to share. She also told us that she’s been writing a lot throughout the pandemic (including through a breakup), and is already working on the next project and set of songs.

She also made it clear that storytelling and details and scene-setting are important to her. She’s a fan and student of writing, not just in music, but in literature. And she uses the tips and tricks and tools she’s picked up when it’s time to pen her own songs. It’s an impressively mature approach from someone so young and early in their career. And we’re here for it.

In a New Music Spotlight highlight of Shapes and Shadows, we said, “she slows things down with a track that gets to your feelings. It’s love and fear and vulnerability and truth. Gifford’s voice and songwriting shine through again on this one. Turn it up and listen close.” And when it was time to offer other artists that we think are a good fit with her, we picked LØLØ, bülow, Oliva Lunny. Add those names to Madisyn’s influences like Taylor Swift, Stevie Nicks, and Phoebe Bridgers – and you’ve started to build yourself a pretty fantastic playlist.

What Madisyn Gifford shows across her seven-song EP is the ability to slow things all the way down to emote and also be a little more irreverent in her sound, while still getting to the point. Tt’s something that’s going to keep us guessing every time she releases a new single or album. Something that’s going to allow her to tell the stories she wants, how she wants, and that’s an exciting prospect as we project into the future of her pop music career.
