Matchbox Twenty Top 10 – by the Numbers
Matchbox Twenty were one of the top bands of my teenage years. Before there were iPods, and when discmans were skippy and unreliable, I could hear a Matchbox Twenty playlist in my head whenever I wanted, and I could sing along as I walked home from work. And I did, often.
And now, I’m looking back at the band and their hits and the songs that have most resonated with the listening public over the years. And I did it with math. This post isn’t about my personal opinion, that has been completely removed. It’s only about how many times fans have listened to the songs in the Matchbox Twenty catalogue.
As always, we started by hitting up Spotify and checking the ‘Popular’ list. We took down the songs and the streams, and then we headed to YouTube. Using only Official Music Videos and Audio uploads (with the exception of Bright Lights which only had a Live video), we gathered more numbers. No acoustic performances, no awards show performances, no behind-the-scenes. Then we did the math. Then we did the ranking. Then we had a Top 10 Matchbox Twenty list!
There are more than 2 billion total streams across these 10 songs. Which means I’m not the only one who has spent some quality time with the band over the years. I’m happy to see it.
