James Barker Band & Dierks Bentley Team Up On New Single – New Old Trucks

Once upon a time, on Queen Street East in Toronto, James Barker Band was on stage at the Boots & Bourbon Saloon when they were joined by a very special guest – Dierks Bentley.

That was five years ago, on the eve of the 2016 Boots & Hearts Music Festival. Fast forward to 2021 and the gang is back together again for James Barker Band’s new single, New Old Trucks, featuring Dierks Bentley.

In the five years since that night in Toronto, James Barker Band has won a Juno, three CCMA Awards, and picked up three #1 singles (Chills, Keep It Simple, Over All Over Again) and have become one of the marquee acts in Canadian country music. In that same time, Dierks Bentley has five #1 singles in Canada and continues to be one of the brightest stars in the genre.

If you haven’t heard the song yet, we invite you to hit play on New Old Trucks now – and then scroll down for more.

James Barker Band ft. Dierks Bentley – New Old Trucks

New Old Trucks is, first and foremost, an ode to old trucks that keep on rolling when everything else changes or breaks or moves on. It’s romantic and nostalgic and we get it. And yes, it’s a country song about a truck – so be it. What’s also in there is young love and the passing of something from father to son and growing up. It’s all there.

The addition of Dierks Bentley in the feature spot is a great fit – not just because of that one night in 2016 that early James Barker Band fans remember, but because it immediately takes us back to Bentley’s 2013 hit, I Hold On. That song starts with these lyrics…

It’s just an old beat up truck
Some say that I should trade up
Now that I got some jangle in my pocket

But what they don’t understand
Is it’s the miles that make a man
I wouldn’t trade that thing in for a rocket

What they don’t know is my dad and me
We drove her out to Tennessee
She’s still here, and now he’s gone
So I hold on

Maybe I’m just basic (very likely) but the truck trope still works for me when it’s used like this. This isn’t a tailgate party song (those have their place too). This is a song that paints a picture and takes me back and reminds me of my dad and my step-dad and my grandpas and the old farm trucks and F-150s I’ve had the honour of cruising in or learning to drive in.

Let’s wrap it all up with some photos of Dierks Bentley and James Barker Band from the last few years – and the streams of the song in case you want to listen to it again.

Chris Lane Kicks Off a New Chapter with Fill Them Boots and Summer Job Money

Chris Lane is a busy man these days. The dad-to-be is getting his home and life ready for his first child, a baby boy. Last week he dropped a new single, Fill Them Boots. And this week he’s back with another new one, Summer Job Money.

I was able to jump on a group interview call with Chris in the lead-up to the new music, where he talked about the songs, working through the pandemic, his impending fatherhood, and more. And now that the music’s started to roll out, it’s even more exciting to look at what’s here and what’s to come.

The first of the new singles Chris talked about was Fill Them Boots. He told us that he’d had the idea for the song written down in his phone for some time before it got written. And, that it came from how Chris and his wife Lauren first met. When it was time to write (late at night after a show) he got on the bus with his co-writers who were on the road with him, and they got to work.

About the song, he said, “I hope it’s a song that people can easily relate to,” adding, “What I’ve tried to accomplish with some of these songs coming out is uptempo… and the end of the day I needed one of those uptempo bangers!”

In case you missed it, or if you love it and want to hear it again, hit play on Fill Them Boots now!

Chris Lane – Fill Them Boots

The first question I asked Chris (when my turn came around) was about change and growth in his music and career. It’s been almost five years since we caught up with him in Toronto for photos and a Q&A, and we wanted to know what has changed for him since then.

He said, “I think for me it’s just the level of writing. I take a listen back all the time, I feel like as a songwriter I’ve 100% grown. A lot of that has to do with just getting around great songwriters and learning from them. Also, doing it every day through this pandemic has really helped me, you know what I mean? When you’re on and off and maybe write once a week, or once every two or three weeks, it’s kinda hard to get into a groove. So ya, I’m proud of the growth in that and I think I’m gonna be proud of the growth in my show and hopefully, people will also enjoy it.”

Chris Lane Sugar Beach

The second time my turn came up, I asked Chris what it felt like to have one foot in the present with so many exciting things going on (new music, a baby on the way. etc.) and foot ready for the future when it’s safe to go out on a full tour and play this new music.

He talked about the timing of having the baby now when he can be home and help and bond with his son. And he told us that he feels fortunate for that opportunity. He also said that he’s, “gonna get the band back together here in a couple weeks and we’re gonna start planning our show and exactly what we want to do. That 30-minute set, the 45-minute set, an hour and then an hour and 15 minutes, exactly what we want to do. And I can’t wait to see how people react to the songs because that determines where I put ‘em at in the set, and I have so much fun figuring out a show and putting it together. I feel like that is something that (a lot of people are great at songwriting, a lot of people are great at vocals, a lot of people are great at all this other stuff in music) I feel like I thrive on being able to put a set together and a show together that’s a lot of fun. So I can’t to have the baby, but stick the other foot into the live touring world again.”

Note: We’re not here to spoil any surprises, but we’ll say this: stay tuned because Chris Lane ain’t done.

Chris Lane-Trackside_Fest

When he talked about Summer Job Money, Chris told us that this is one that he didn’t write, but that he was all-in on from the first time he heard it. He mentioned Kenny Chesney and the vibe that he’s able to create and share in his more ‘summer-time’ type jams and that he wanted to find something nostalgic that brought that to the table.

He also told us in an answer to another question, that he grew up working with his dad for his own summer job money. Lane & Sons Landscaping is still going strong to this day, and Chris said that he still puts the skills he learned as a teenager and college student to use doing his own lawn care and landscaping at home.

The song is a jam and has all of the things Chris says he was looking for. It’s a summer feeling. You can picture him waving to Kenny Chesney from one boat to another. And I can remember working for my summer job money throwing hay bails and flipping burgers some 20-odd years ago.

Hit play now to listen to the brand new Chris Lane summer vibe jam, Summer Job Money!

Chris Lane – Summer Job Money

Congratulations to Chris Lane for all of the exciting things happening for him. We wish Lauren and the baby great health, and we can’t wait to see Chris performing live up here in Canada ASAP.

Brothers Osborne, Skeletons Album Review

Brothers Osborne‘s third full-length studio album Skeletons hits shelves and streams today, and it kicks just as much ass as we hoped it would.

The brothers pair their acclaimed voice (T.J.) and guitar work (John) and give us 12 tracks across nearly 40 minutes and you’ll find yourself tapping your toes, singing along, and maybe even feeling like you want to shout a little hell ya while you listen.

Get yourself started with All Night. Trust me.

It’s true (and a shame) that Brothers Osborne might not be as well known as they should be. With more major award wins (4 CMA, 2 ACM) than Top 20 singles (2: Stay A Little Longer, It Ain’t My Fault), the boys’ fans are the ones that know. The ones that can’t wait for new music. The ones you know that they are taking the music with the opinions and the talent with the men. The ones that can’t wait for live shows and special performances. The ones who are happy to have these 12 songs and the prospect of more from Brothers Osborne in the future.

I’d love to tell you that I think there’s a huge radio hit on Skeletons, but I’m not sure there is. The title track is awesome. I think that All The Good Ones Are (featured on Spotify’s New Music Friday playlist on album release day) is a fun song that feels like it’s begging for folks to be dancing on honky-tonk floors. I liked All Night so much I shared it in this post already, and it’s a Top 30 single, but I don’t know how much higher it will climb. And I do think that High Note has the kind of heart and feeling and connection to get to people… but who knows.

However, that doesn’t take a single GD thing away from the music.

We’ve said the same thing about artists like Kip Moore and Drake White and other fan favourites who put on excellent live shows, write and record great albums, and stay true to themselves and we will never begrudge an artist for making the music they love and want to make.

While we’re talking songs… it’s imperative that we give John Osborne the love he deserves for Muskrat Greene. It’s 2:36 of fantastic strumming, picking, rhythm, toe-tapping, ivory-tickling and fun that leads perfectly into Dead Man’s Curve as the next track and I can already imagine how it sounds and feels and transitions from one track to the next on vinyl – and I love it.

T.J. and John Osborne also wrote or co-wrote every song on the album, giving them another feather in their caps and credit to the art they’ve created. Good on them for being involved in all of the pieces and parts of Skeletons. It might not sound exceptional for an artist to write on their own album, but it’s worth celebrating, especially when the songs are of this kind of quality.

It also allows the duo to share more of themselves. In a press release from Universal Music, John said, “If Pawn Shop was our introduction, and Port Saint Joe was like the first conversation we had with someone over a beer, then Skeletons is the moment where you start getting down to the real stuff and showing who you really are. If you really want to get to know us, this is the record to do it.”

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

As the boys sing on the fourth track, “I’m good for some but I’m not for everyone”, and the folks that Brothers Osborne are good for, well, you’re in for a treat.

Note: Also on I’m Not For Everyone, TJ sings, “I’m always speakin’ my mind when I’ve better off bitin’ my tongue.” And if you’ve ever heard the brothers weigh in on issues like gun control with views that oppose the conservative south NRA base, you’ll understand maybe what they’re singing about. But I’m glad they’re speaking their minds on important issues like that.

It’s been 20 years since T.J. and John performed in the Anne Arundel County Battle of the Bands, and to say that they’ve come a long way wold be a massive understatement. With three studio albums, awards, well-known songs, and celebrated voices in the country community, Brothers Osborne have put themselves squarely on the country music map. And Skeletons is only going to cement that more.

Hit play on the stream of Skeletons now to give Brothers Osborne a listen. Enjoy.

Boots & Hearts Unveils 2021 Festival Lineup!

On Sunday night during the Canadian Country Music Association Awards, Boots & Hearts announced that Sam Hunt would be coming to Burl’s Creek in 2021 as a headliner at the country music festival. And then, on Monday morning, the complete 2021 lineup was released on the BH website.

As expected, many of the artists that were scheduled to appear at the 2020 festival are on the 2021 lineup, but there are some changes with 10 new names on the poster including Hunt. Other new names include The Cadillac Three, Tebey, HARDY, Chris Lane, Raelynn, Jon Langston, Ashland Craft, Sean Stemaly, and Travis Denning.

However, with new names added, some names had to come off. Granger Smith (and Earl Dibbles Jr.), Alessia Cara, Andy Grammer, Riley Green, Jessie James Decker, Adam Doleac, King Calaway, Seaforth, Caylee Hammack, and Dwayne Gretzky are all absent from the 2021 lineup, making the in/out even at 10.

Whether you like the names added more than the names removed is a point of personal preference, but I can tell you that I’m already looking forward to seeing Sam Hunt, HARDY, TC3, Tebey, and Raelynn up on a Boots & Hearts stage. So those are all wins for me.

Tickets for Boots & Hearts 2021 are scheduled to go on sale this Thursday, October 1, 2020 with select pre-sale events starting Monday, September 28. Visit bootsandhearts.com/tickets/ and bootsandhearts.frontgatetickets.com/ for more details now.

Now, scroll down to see the full day-to-day Boots & Hearts 2021 lineup, some photos of the performers that we’ve captured over the years, and stay tuned for more news, previews, and interviews as we all hope for the safe and happy return of the Boots and Hearts Music Festival!

Cavendish Beach Music Festival Announces Full 2020 Lineup

After some patient and impatient waiting, country music fans on Canada’s east coast got some welcome news on Thursday morning when the Cavendish Beach Music Festival announced its 2020 lineup!

With headliners Miranda Lambert and Dan + Shay already announced back in November, we knew that the festival was prepared to offer up some big talent again this summer. And now, we know that list includes Brett Young, Dallas Smith, Tim Hicks, Chris Lane, Mitchell Tenpenny and more. In all, 15 artists have been announced for the fest in PEI so far. We expect more names to come as they round out their plans.

Related: Cavendish Beach Music Festival Announces 2020 Headliners!

What we do know is that July 10 to 12 looks like it’s going to be a really good time at Cavendish, Prince Edward Island.

It’s great to see Canadian talent like Smith, Hicks, Jojo Mason, Tebey, Steven Lee Olsen, and The Redhill Valleys on the lineup. However, we do have to point out that of the 15 names, only Lambert, The Redhill Valleys, and newly announced Carly Pearce will bring female voices to the stage. We hope that more women are added in future announcements.

Weekend and Single Day Passes are available now for Cavendish Beach Music Festival, with prices currently on Tier 1 for weekend passes. VIP passes are also up for grabs with three levels: VIP, Sunroof, and Hayloft available. All with their own perks and upgrades to the general admission passes. Click Here to see all ticket information now.

The prevailing sentiment from every person we’ve talked to (fans, performers, behind-the-scenes industry folks) about the Cavendish Beach Music Festival over the years has been positive. Everyone has a good time. The fans enjoy the show. The performers enjoy the fans. And when all of that comes together at an outdoor summer music festival, it’s hard to beat.

Plus, the famous East Coast hospitality is the added bonus the festival always has going for it.

Check out the 2020 Cavendish Beach Music Festival as announced on Thursday morning, and stay tuned for more updates, previews, and information as we get closer to the festival!

Trackside Music Festival: Day 2 Photo Review

As the weather heated up so did the acts for day 2 at Trackside Music Festival in London, ON!

The day 2 schedule brought Steven Lee Olsen, Nashville’s Chris Lane, The talented Cole Swindell and of course FGL (Florida Georgia Line) to the main stage. FGL turned it up a notch or two as they said “Canada we’re here to keep the party going!” and all 12 thousand plus fans jumped up and were on their feet with their beverages held high.

As a 1st year festival, Trackside has both shown that they know how to throw a party, and that there’s room to grow. We’ll see you all next year!

It Don’t Work Like That: Vanessa Marie Carter Live at The Ranch!

A few weeks back I saw a young, talented artist named Vanessa Marie Carter when she was one of the opening acts for Canadian country giant, George Canyon.

Vanessa played a few songs and sounded good, but I wanted to see for myself what she could do with more than just a few songs. And what better place than The Stampede Ranch in Guelph, where you have 3-4 sets in a few hours instead of a few songs in just a few minutes as an opening act.

Vanessa Marie Carter The Ranch

If you’ve ever been to the Ranch, you know that it’s rare to see anyone on the floor for the first set. But this time, back in the corner, the dancing started early. No one ever wants to be the first on the floor… but then there’s always one song that gets the crowd up. And for Vanessa and her crowd it was That Don’t impress Me Much by none other than Canada’s very own Shania Twain!

I’ll be honest, I would have liked to hear more of Vanessa’s own music that she co-wrote with some Nashville writers. But on a Thursday, Friday and Saturday night at the bar you always hear a lot of covers. What I found very impressive was that Vanessa’s stage presence. She was up dancing and interacting with the crowd, something you don’t usually see this early in an artist’s career.

Vanessa opened for Kira Isabella in 2014, in 2015 it was Brett Kissel and the Band Perry, and so far in 2016, she’s already been on stage supporting George Canyon. So now we have to ask ourselves who this Oakville native will open for next?!

For now, we’ll just have to wait and see.

Vanessa does have some tour dates coming up in Toronto and Kitchener… so if you’re in the area – check her out!
