You Are My Sunshine When Skies Are Grey

The other night I tweeted “You are my sunshine when skies are grey” and got a couple of responses with other lyrics to the song that we all know.

Then I got to thinking. The song is about 1 person. The love of the singer’s life. But when I thought about it more in terms of my own life I realized that I have a lot of sunbeam providers when the skies are less than blue. My friends and family and followers and co-workers and etc. are all great at taking their turns picking me up when things are just plain balls.

They say, and I believe, that it takes a village to raise a child. And if that’s the case then why doesn’t it make sense that it also takes a village to support an adult? Isn’t that why we create and maintain friendships in our adult lives? It can’t all just be about having someone to drink with.

It’s that network of people that we build that is meant to help us when times are tough and skies are grey. It’s their love and support that we need to be able to count on when we’re on our ass in the dirt and need a hand to get up and dust ourselves off.

I’m lucky to have a network that I know would do that for me. I’m embarrassed that I haven’t always used them that way. I regret the fact that I haven’t always believed that it makes sense to tell them when I need help because they have bigger things to worry about. Even if they do I know that they love me and will do everything that they can to help. I believe that with all of my heart.

It’s also deathly important to me that those same people know that I would do the exact same thing for them. I’m here whenever I can be. I’ll do whatever I can do to help. I’ll be part of the village. I’ll be your sunshine when skies are grey.

So no matter the weather, or wherever you are – remember that you’re not alone and there is no reason not to have sunshine in your life.

And remember the 2011 mantra: Be Awesome!
