Born in North Bay, Cory Marquardt grew up with a hockey stick in his hands… and he kept it there through his teenage years playing junior in northern Ontario. But now, things have changed. You’re far more likely to find Cory with a guitar in his hands, amped up to get on stage and put on a show.

With his current single, Smartphone making waves on CMT.ca and with country music fans across the country, it’s time for Cory to hit the road and put on those shows he loves. This time out fans in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba will have a chance to see Marquardt with Aaron Pritchett and King & Cash on the Outlaws & Outsiders tour.

In total the boys will play 18 dates (see them here) on the tour between January 15 and February 5 – and then it’s on to the rest of 2015!

Before Cory hit the road for the tour we caught up with him by email to answer some questions and get us all as excited as he is for the release of This Man later in the year.

Q. We’ve heard the story about the bar in Kingston (click here to read the story) and you getting up on stage… in a few words, can you look back and tell it from your perspective now?

CM: Well it really was what started it all. I had never sang by myself on stage before. Thanks to a loud rowdy crowd and a little liquid courage I got my ass up there and sang a couple originals and a few covers. After my set people at the bar where asking if I played anywhere else, If I had CD’s available. I was truly surprised with their reaction to my 5 songs and that being my first time…I caught the bug from there I guess and had a feeling that this is what I was meant to do. Write, Perform, Sing and hopefully be on the BIG stage.

Q. As a good Canadian boy from North Bay, Ontario you grew up playing hockey and did pretty well for yourself on the ice – are their any comparisons you can make between being on stage for a big show and playing in a big game?

CM: I think hockey has really helped with what I do today. Especially Junior hockey. Travelling, working hard, on a schedule, meeting people and fans. Most shows are in hockey arenas especially here in Canada! The green rooms are dressing rooms where we all get ready and rowdy for the big game/show. The two are pretty similar in that matter. There’s a rule that comes with hockey and I take it on stage with me every night. No matter the game or the situation. Do your best, work hard and most of all HAVE FUN!

Q. The “New Outlaw” movement has started in country music with Eric Church, Kasey Musgraves and others. What does it feel like to be walking that same line and putting yourself in their company?

Eric Church: Boots and Hearts 2015

CM: First off, I’m a huge fan of Eric Church and very happy with what he is doing in country music. I still have some boot left to fill but I’m making my way and plan on doing that. Like me, he has a solid rock background mixed with some traditional country which is included especially in our live show. The lyrics, music and stories are true and to me that’s what country music is all about. I plan on making my own wave like that with a 90’s country/ 80’s rock sound. I’m honoured to be in their company and to be in that “brand”.

Q. Time to dream! If we asked you to put together the tour of your choice, what 2 country music artists would you want to share the stage with for a couple months? (that you haven’t already)

CM: If I could pick 2 artists to tour with right now off the top of my head I’d say seeing (Cory Marquardt, Erich Church and Merle Haggard) all on one bill would be a true honour and a dream come true! I think that would be one hell of tour and a great time.

Q. We love good beer, and it seems like you do too. Tell us how your relationship with the River Dog Brewing Co. came to be.

Cory Marquardt River Dog Brewing Co

CM: River Dog has been supporting me for well over a year now through social media and their pages like Facebook and Twitter. The cool thing about RD is that they are family. The founders of the company are on my dad’s side of the family which is really cool and I’m truly blessed to have them sponsoring me on the Outlaws and Outsiders Tour coming up. They have my back and believe in what I do. Big shout out to Dawna and the whole staff out there in South Carolina at River Dog Brewing Co! THANK YOU.

Q. If we snuck a look at your iTunes right now, what 3 artists would be find on your most played list?

CM: I listen to so many different genres of music I guess it all depends on the day. Some days it’s Church and Haggard, The next Pantera and Iron Maiden, Rush, Deep Purple and another day could be John Mayer or Lamb Of God If it’s good… it’s good!

Cory Marquardt Logo 2015Q. In 50 words or less, tell us what country music fans can expect from your new album, This Man in 2015?

CM: The songs on my new album come from my very first writing trip in Nashville (Fall 2012) to my most recent one in November 2014. You can expect some party anthems, sing alongs and power ballads even a little rock/metal in there on a track called ” Burning up the black top”, one I wrote with a good friend of mine James Dean Hicks. I’m excited to release this monster. Like I said earlier I’m staying away from the “pop” side of things and keeping the country real and a little rocking with a 90’s country/80’s rock sound. Can’t wait to have it out there for y’all to hear!

note: We’ll happily forgive the length on that last answer – we know how excited Cory is to get this album released and out to the world.
