When you’re done, leave a comment telling us which of them are going to make your playlist.

Ready? Let’s go!

Artist: Carrie Underwood
Hometown: Muskogee, OK
Genre: Country
Related Artists: Miranda Lambert, Kelsea Ballerini, Lauren Alaina
Song: Cry Pretty
Notes: Cry Pretty is already being called one of the best country songs of 2018… and it’s been out less than a week. Carrie Underwood’s highly anticipated release doesn’t disappoint, delivering the kind of vocal we’ve come to expect from the superstar, along with lyrical content that feels country to the bone without the cliches.

Artist: Florence + The Machine
Hometown: London, UK
Genre: Indie Rock/Pop
Related Artists: Kate Nash, Of Monsters and Men, HAIM
Song: Sky Full Of Song
Notes: The newest offering from Florence + The Machine is a mostly stripped down exhibition of Florence’s voice being as captivating as ever. From note one, Sky Full Of Song grabs your attention and holds it for four minutes, and makes us wish there was an entire new album to listen to today.

Artist: Tim Hicks
Hometown: Niagara Falls, ON
Genre: Country
Related Artists: Dallas Smtih, Dean Brody, Tebey
Song: Loud
Notes: Hicks is one of Canada’s premier country rockers, and Loud is another pumped up anthem to add to his list of hits. The combination of electric guitars, pounding drums, and Tim Hicks’ vocals, make for a song that begs for summer and big stages with pyro and screaming fans!

Artist: Breaking Benjamin
Hometown: Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania
Genre: Rock
Related Artists: Shinedown, Papa Roach, Staind
Song: Torn In Two
Notes: If you’ve got any aggression or energy you want to unleash, turn the volume way up on Torn In Two and get at it. Breaking Benjamin does what they do best, and this song accomplishes the goal of making me feel like I could run through a wall and sing along at the same time.

Artist: Chances
Hometown: Montreal, QC
Genre: Indie Rock/Pop
Related Artists: Plants and Animals, La Bronze, Lydia Kepinski
Song: Fire To Go
Notes: Chances call Fire To Go an anthem of resilience, an empowering break-up song that talks about taking a stand and resisting the temptation to let someone back into your life when you know it’s a mistake. The layered and paired voices come together perfectly to create a dynamic sound on top of the electronic work in the background. Their debut album, Traveler, coming later this month and Fire To Go is a great place to start for new listeners.

One comment on New Music Spotlight with Carrie Underwood and More

  1. Steve Chubbo says:

That Carrie Underwood song is perfect (Except for the beat in the verses, which sounds too electronic).

Problem is it’s barely a country song, and more something I’m used to hearing Celine belt out.
