New Music Spotlight with Birds of Bellwoods, Goodnight, Sunrise and More

New Music Spotlight

New Music From Birds of Bellwoods, Goodnight, Sunrise, The Reklaws, Drew Gregory and Catlow

After a super busy week taking in all that Canadian Music Week had to offer, we’ve bumped into the “there’s too much great music to put in a single Spotlight post”, again. Here in the second of our Friday New Music Spotlights, I bring you an all Canadian installment.

I’ve included some indie rock, some country and a little bit of awesome.

Let’s do this!

Artist: Birds of Bellwoods
Hometown: Toronto, ON
Genre: Alt Rock
Related: Duncan Fellows, Young in the City, The Corcoran Brothers
Song: Let You Go
Notes: The latest release from Toronto-based Birds of Bellwoods is one of my favourites. The black and white video treatment is beautiful and Director James Villeneuve and Producer Black Fawn have done something memorable. Let You Go is the first song the band recorded for their upcoming album Victoria. Birds of Bellwoods have taken what could be a very sad story and turned it into an upbeat forward moving tale. I’m very much looking forward to the album release in late 2018.

Artist: Goodnight, Sunrise
Hometown: Toronto, ON
Genre: Indie Rock
Related Artists: The Beaches, Alvvays, Trent Severn
Song: Runaways
Notes: We’ve been telling you about Goodnight, Sunrise for a little while now and this past week they hit some major milestones. The band was able to add a sold-out show at The Phoenix during Canadian Music Week and oh yeah, just a little thing, they opened for Bon Jovi at the ACC! The new song is more of what we love. Great lyrics, the mix of David and Vanessa’s voices in the foreground with Paul Weaver keeping everything together with a great beat. It’s fast, and the chorus gets stuck in your head.

Runaways is about trying to keep a relationship alive at any cost, but realizing that at a certain point sometimes the price might just be too high to pay.”

Goodnight, Sunrise just released a 20 stop tour starting June 9th so if you haven’t seen them live, now’s the time!

Artist: The Reklaws
Hometown: Cambridge, ON / Nashville, TN
Genre: Country
Related Artists: Andrew Hyatt, Chris Buck Band, Shawn Austin
Song: Long Live The Night
Notes: The Reklaws have released the second single from their recent EP, bringing good time summer vibes to the sound and video. The live performance scenes from Toronto’s Rock N Horse Saloon offer a quick look at the energy you’ll find at The Reklaws’ live shows, which are always a lot of fun. Long Live The Night is a great summer jam and the video is full of laughter and familiar faces.

Artist: Drew Gregory
Hometown: Standard, AB
Genre: Country
Related Artists: Dan Davidson, Bobby Wills
Song: Know Good
Notes: We’ve got one that’s hot off the presses, the video for Drew Gregory’s Know Good was released today. It’s got a great upbeat message and Drew’s signature smile. The music and message are genuine and we think Drew has a hit on his hands! Check out that barn it’s awesome!

“Right here, right now, let’s sing it out loud.”

Drew Gregory’s new album Good Place to Start will be released on June 15, but pre-orders are available now. And if you order now you’ll get three tracks right away.

Artist: Catlow
Hometown: Vancouver, BC
Genre: Awesome (I swear, that’s what it says on their Facebook page!) Alt-Rock / Pop
Related Artists: Hunter Valentine, Kinnie Star
Song: Scrapes
Notes: Coming to us via their exclusive premiere on Pure Grain Audio, Scrapes is a mix of genres that refuses to be pigeon-holed. It’s haunting and it’s beautiful.

Lead vocalist Natasha Thirsk says, “Scrapes on your heart. Sometimes you do stupid things in love, or the thought of being in love. Sometimes you let people hurt you knowingly. Some people put you on the back burner and when they decide to come around, you still let them back into your heart. Lovely words and ugly words exchanged in passion. You always end up the other side with Scrapes on your heart. Whether by your choice to leave or someone else’s. They will all have an effect on how you love in the future. Better or not. That’s human.”
