Hard To Get – Runaway Angel Single Release Interview

Runaway Angel has been working hard to make a name for themselves and spread their music for the last five years, and now they’re back at it with their newest single, Hard To Get on its way to Canadian country radio.

Co-written by American country starlet RaeLynn, is a summer-time bop. It’s got just enough pop undertone to make you move while keeping the country vibe that Cadence, Stacey, and Anne have cultivated since they first came together to form Runaway Angel.

We caught up with the trio in Toronto to talk about Hard To Get, and they told us that they always knew this one was going to be a single. When their 2017 album, Zero, came together, they had two singles in mind right away. The first, Witness, was released, the group made a music video, and their fans latched onto it as their newest favourite. The second is Hard To Get.

The trio is hoping for the same response (and more) as they prepare to go on an Ontario radio tour to promote the single and introduce it to country music fans who may not know it yet.

We already called it a summer-time bop, but I want to bring it up again. This really is the perfect time for the song to be introduced to radio and online playlists. The vibe is there, it’s a bunch of fun – and we agree with Runaway Angel when they say that they think this is a song that women of all ages from about 14 and up can identify with and relate to.

As we talked about the song we learned that there was a lot of process and change that went into making Hard To Get their own. The original demo was poppy, like pop radio poppy. And when considering that an 18-year-old (at the time) RaeLynn had written it, there wasn’t the weight behind the message that the lyrics held possible. But, armed with the belief that the song was a winner, and the persistence to work with it to find the Runaway Angel vibe that it needed, they pressed forward.

The result of that work, and their willingness to strip things away, add new things in, and work through all of the details involved, is what you hear on the track. And, as we touched on in our chat, the feeling is that lyrics become more accessible to women of all ages when sung by adults with more mature relationship experience than that of an 18-year old.

Note: This is where we also want to give some love to Runaway Angel’s producer, Jason Barry. This guy is a multi-award winner and does big work in country music and beyond. His fingerprints are all over Zero, and we love it.

CMAO Awards 2016 Runaway Angel

While we’re congratulating Runaway Angel on their hard work and talent, we need to shout them out for their 2018 Country Music Association of Ontario nomination in the Group or Duo of the Year category. The nod is their seventh in the last four years at the CMAOs, and serves as great recognition for all that they do.

While we were hanging out we talked about the nomination and the CMAO weekend in London, ON, and the trio told us that they’re excited to be going back to celebrate with the rest of the Ontario country music family. Like many of the artists we’ve talked to about the awards weekend, the opportunity to catch up with their fellow artists and celebrate everyone’s successes together makes them happy.

Before we were done our early week hang, we talked about Hard To Get as part of the Runway Angel summer season. Cadence, Stacey, and Ann all talked about the song fitting perfectly with their new live set, bringing that upbeat, fun, good time energy and enthusiasm to the stage. We’ve seen them do it before. And now, with a new single, fan favourites, and hand-picked covers, Runaway Angel is ready to entertain music fans all summer long.

Hit play on Hard To Get now, call your local country radio station to request it, and check out Runaway Angel live this summer at Countryfest on the Grand, Trackside Music Festival, Kinstock, Helping Hands Benefit Concert and more!
