Coheed and Cambria with Protest the Hero and Crown Lands
Coheed and Cambria rolled into Toronto with their progressive metal sound on Thursday night for the Unheavenly Tour with Protest the Hero and Crown Lands. It was an all-ages show, and it was everything.
The sixth show on the eight date Canadian leg was a special one because it served as the hometown show for both Protest the Hero, from Whitby and Crown Lands from Oshawa. Sold out and packed to the balconies, there were fans in abundance.

Crown Lands
Crown Lands took the stage first and played a mix of tunes from their first EP Mantra and their latest release Rise Over Run. But a Crown Lands set wouldn’t be complete without a Rush cover thrown in. The boys finished out their set with Working Man with a short but sweet drum solo thrown in.
It was a pleasure to see Crown Lands up on the stage at Rebel, owning it. They’ve got a very short break before they head out to tour with Primus in the US followed up by some dates with Reignwolf. Check their tour schedule for details.

Protest the Hero
There was no shortage of Protest the Hero fans in the audience on Thursday night. Rody Walker and the band have been at this since 2001, they’re showing no signs of slowing down, and their fans are right there with them.
The band played an eight-song set including a brand new tune and let us all know that there’s new music on the way. There were songs from Scurrilous, Volition, Fortress and Pacific Myth. There were jokes about some not so polite lyrics and Rody’s mom and family being in the audience. And there was a little hopeful hockey banter. It’s a good time of year to be a Leaf’s fan, and Rody sounded excited about the upcoming season.
The energy level was a ten, the band is ridiculously tight, and we’re looking forward to the new album.

Coheed and Cambria came to Toronto bringing fan favourites, new music, and they had a story to tell. From the second their visuals hit the screen the audience lost their minds. And rightfully so, this was one of the best shows I’ve seen. The staging, the lights, the music, and the fans all added to the experience.
The band opened with Prologue followed by the first single off The Unheavenly Creatures, The Dark Sentencer. They moved through their set playing songs off of Year of the Black Rainbow, The Second Stage Turbine Blade, The Color Before The Sun, In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3 and more. The audience sang along at the top of their lungs, with fists pumping in the air, moving and singing as one. It was spectacular to be in the midst of, the shared energy was palpable.
That energy was relentless and continued throughout the show, up to and including the encore performance of Welcome Home.
You can tell when a band is having a good time and there were smiles all around. Claudio repeatedly told us, that we’d made the trip north worth it. I’m pretty sure that everyone at Rebel was warmed by his words and we were glad they felt welcome and appreciated.
It was worth the eight-year wait. I hope we don’t have to wait another eight years for their return.
