Joey Landreth – Hindsight Album Review
After a string of singles that both satisfied and teased us, Joey Landreth has released Hindsight with nine tracks for us to fully dig into.
The follow-up to his acclaimed 2017 album, Whiskey brings the guitar, vocal, and songwriting performances that we expect from the Juno award-winning member of The Bros. Landreth while moving forward in his journey as a musician and a man. Throughout the nine songs and 35 minutes of alt-folk/roots/rock/singer-songwriter music from the Winnipeg artist, we are pulled in. And we like it that way.
On stage, Landreth is a fantastic performer whose vocal range and dynamic and masterful use of his guitar capture the audience’s attention every time we see him. It’s not easy to do, and even harder to replicate in the studio. However, with the right songs, notes, tweaks, and feeling, Joey Landreth has done that for us. We’ve had the chance to see some of these songs live already, including Forgiveness, Cryin’, Dangerous Heart, and now we want more.

Across the album, from Forgiveness at the top to the title track, Hindsight at the end, we are treated to talent, authenticity, and vulnerability. There’s a subtle simplicity in the lyrics that allow for a story to connect and sink in deeper than the surface. And that matches so very well with the intricate guitar work too. They play off of each other. They are a signature. They give us everything we want. If you’re looking for introspection, you’ll find it. If you’re looking to sit down and appreciate the craftsmanship of a record, it’s there.
And if you’re looking for an artist to add to your list of favourites, Joey Landreth is a quality candidate.
Last fall we described Joey Landreth as ‘not a household name, but an if you know, you know‘ artist. And while we can’t tell you if Hindsight will change that, it certainly makes us glad that we know.
We had to wait a little longer than we hoped for this album. We were ready. We were waiting. But now it’s here and we’re happy!
Hit play on Hindsight. Let it play through. Then hit play again and start jamming along. Enjoy!
