I’m back with a New Music Spotlight for you.

We’ve some new acts, and some we’ve heard from before this time around. We hope you like them all.

Now, scroll through, hit play, add your favourites to your playlists, and please, share them with your friends!

Artist: The Honest Heart Collective
Hometown: Thunder Bay, ON
Genre: Rock
Related: Kasador, Birds of Bellwoods, The Glorious Sons
Song: 11/17
Notes: On October 8th, The Honest Heart Collective will be releasing their third album, More Harm. The album was written after losing control of their van (thanks to black ice) on Canadian highway 11/17. They narrowly escaped disaster and used the experience to fuel the album. Today we’ve got the new video for the lead single 11/17.

“In an unforgettable chorus, lead singer Ryan MacDonald begs the question “are we ever gonna get it right?”, a sentiment stemming from the accident, but all too relatable after the world’s shared experience over the last year and a half.” – press release

“11/17 is the highway that runs through our hometown, always the first stretch of road we drive either direction we travel in. After the setback of the accident, the support of our friends and family was integral in finding comfort in life’s challenges, making do and getting through it. It was important to us to share that part of our journey together as a band, and with the video, we also wanted to showcase our love for making music and how much fun that can be. We’re really proud of the new material we’ve been working on, and are excited to finally share it with the world.” – Ryan

Artist: Nelson Sobral
Hometown: Toronto, ON
Genre: Soul / Blues / Rock / Country
Related: The Black Crowes, Joey Landreth, Bahamas
Song: In The Middle Of The Night
Notes: Nelson Sobral is back with a brand new single. It delivers positivity, hope, happy vibes, and soul-feeding sounds.

One of our favourites, Nelson knows how to tell a story accompanied by the most talented instrumentation.

“I’m a huge classic soul & country music fan, and this track hits the sweet spot.” – Nelson Sobral

Artist: Leeroy Stagger
Hometown: Lethbridge, AB
Genre: Alt-Country
Related: Justin Rutledge, Blackie and the Rodeo Kings, Kathleen Edwards
Song: Does Anybody Live Here?
Notes: Leeroy Stagger also has a new album coming. We can expect Dystopian Weekends on October 1st. Does Anybody Live Here is the second single from the upcoming record. The song looks at the ache of a breakup. It’s soft and beautiful.

“It’s been ages since I’ve felt the weight of a broken heart due to a break up,” says Leeroy. “Last year some close friends decided to break it off after a few years of a joined life together. As a writer, I’ve always been able to put myself into most others shoes and empathetically feel those feelings. That moment as it all goes down, if we are enlightened enough, it can go fairly smoothly. If we aren’t, it can be a real mess of tension and tears. This situation was no different from most breakups. Everybody can relate to a broken heart – the melancholy and pain of a separation. My job as a songwriter is to distill those feelings into a four-minute song.” – Leeroy Stagger

Artist: kintaro
Hometown: Toronto, ON
Genre: Alt-Pop/Rock
Related: Birds of Bellwoods
Song: Rewind
Notes: We first became aware of kintaro through their work with Birds of Bellwoods. They’ve wowed us in the past with their upright bass skills. Through the solo projects we’re treated to a completely new sound. It’s soothing and gentle, made even sweeter because of the inspiration behind it.

“Rewind is the sophomore release from my forthcoming EP. It is a love song for those who we’ve lost, and an homage to my late father who passed 3 years ago on June 28th. It honours his legacy with a blend of 80’s-inspired beats and lush acoustic instrumentation. Rewind was recorded during quarantine in my family home using a variety of dad’s instruments, including trumpet, piano, and an old Fostex cassette machine.”

Written, performed, recorded, and produced by Kintaro Akiyama. Mixed by Jack Emblem. Mastered by João Carvalho.

Artist: Angels & Airwaves
Hometown: San Diego, CA
Genre: Rock
Related: Blink 182, Boxcar Racer, American Hi-Fi
Song: Losing My Mind
Notes: With a super catchy chorus, fun dance moves, and Las Vegas as the backdrop, this video can’t lose. Looking for something silly, this should be your first choice. Keep your eyes open for their new album LIFEFORMS which comes out on September 24th.

“I wanted to write a song about a totally insane idea that would never happen, like, what if our own country was being torn apart by racists, a pandemic, and domestic terrorism, but all at the same time… you know, just normal made up shit that would never happen,” – Tom Delonge
