Jess Moskaluke Scores First #1 Single with Country Girls

Jess Moskaluke has three Female Artist of the Year awards from the Canadian Country Music Association, a CCMA for Album of the Year (Past The Past), a Juno Award for Country Album of the Year (Kiss Me Quiet), and now she can add her first #1 single at Canadian country radio to her list of accomplishments as Country Girls has officially climbed to the top of the chart!

Fans of the Saskatchewan singer likely know her story by now. From her beginning as a YouTube cover artist to early releases like Catch Me If You Can and Good Lovin’ to her big burst onto the scene in 2014 with Cheap Wine And Cigarettes and then to award wins, tours, national recognition, and a move into the upper echelon of Canadian country music stars. Over the last eight years, country music fans have seen her progression and watched her play a big part in the recent resurgence of women in Canadian country, and country music overall.

In a lengthy social media post, Moskaluke gave thanks to her team, the songwriters, country radio, and more – while also making the point that this is a great time for Canadian music. “This is a big one. #1. My FIRST #1. Whoa. 😳When you achieve a goal that you’d always thought was impossible, it’s tough to know what to feel. I feel like I have SO much to say, SO many to thank, and yet at the same time, I somehow feel completely speechless. And I’m shaking as I write this, haha. Buckle up, y’all this ain’t a short one. 😂…”read more

We did our first Q&A with Jess almost six full years ago in March 2014 as part of our Boots & Hearts preview series. It was our first exposure to her as an artist, and we’ve done a lot more since then. Over the years we’ve talked about equal play at radio, new albums, playing live, headlining festivals, balancing life and music, and more. And the next time we catch up, we’ll talk about going number one.

Two years ago, we sat with Jess Moskaluke and talked about legacy for the first time. She had reached the point where young artists were starting to cover her songs on YouTube. She was becoming the influence for a new generation of women hoping to make a career for themselves in country music. She had already earned it then, by becoming the first Canadian woman since Shania Twain to earn a Platinum plaque (Cheap Wine And Cigarettes) and by being one of the faces of the class of young women making waves in Canadian country.

And now, with the success of Country Girls, Jess Moskaluke joins Lindsay Ell, Tenille Townes, Meghan Patrick, and MacKenzie Porter in the new generation of women who have hit #1 like Shania, Terri Clark, Michelle Wright, and Patricia Conroy did before them.

Fans may always since Cheap Wine And Cigarettes loudest (it’s hard to replace a first love), but Country Girls will always be Jess Moskaluke’s first #1 single.

Congratulations, Jess. You earned it.
