Andrew Hyatt, Neverland EP Review
Andrew Hyatt‘s new EP, Neverland has landed with six tracks from the Canadian country artist, and new favourites for his fans.
The 2018 SiriusXM Top of the Country and Country Music Association of Ontario Rising Star winner follows up his twin EPs Cain and Abel and continues to move forward in his country music career. With pre-release singles like I Needed That, Stuck, and Top 15 radio hit, Didn’t Know Me leading the way, this is another collection that Andrew Hyatt’s growing fanbase will be able to dive into.
As always, Hyatt is at his best when his heart is on his sleeve and he’s pouring vulnerability and emotion through the speakers. And there’s plenty of that on Neverland for those who want it.
Andrew Hyatt – Neverland
Andrew Hyatt does emotion as well as anyone in the genre. When he starts laying out his feelings it never feels like he’s pandering or trying too hard. It hits hard in the heart. And on Neverland he does it on I Needed That and the title track and he’s right on target.
These songs, all of them, build the catalogue of Andrew Hyatt and increase his live setlist options when we get back to concerts and festivals. Whether he’s on a brightly-lit stage with a sweaty crowd or playing a stripped-down acoustic set, he’s going to be able to pull from this new EP to go along with his previous releases, going all the way back to MGR (Me And A Girl And A Radio) and Most Of Me.
Neverland‘s collection of songs also feels like it’s telling the story of Andrew Hyatt continuing his journey in life, not just music. These are story songs that seem to fit the narrative of a man moving onto the next phase of his life, through grace and good fortune and all that go with it.
Andrew Hyatt – I Needed That
Andrew Hyatt’s vocal performances, the instrumentation, and the content of the songs on this EP all shine. From ringing guitars with an undeniably country tone, to the imagery of a sad man drinking and smoking in his truck, to emotive and clear lyrical delivery, it’s all here.
As usual, I wish this EP was a 12-song LP and came in at 45 minutes instead of 20, but I’m greedy like that, and that doesn’t mean that I don’t enjoy this listen from front-to-back. I very much do.
Starting with Hang Around Kind and finishing with Get Away With Anything, Neverland is a win for Andrew Hyatt and his team.
It feels and shares and when it gets just a little more intense and hard-hitting on that last track, it’s a reminder of those sweaty nights we’ve had watching him in packed bars on small stages with a full band.
And when we get that again we’ll all be able to look at each other and say, I needed that.
