Hank Williams Top 10 – By The Numbers

I’ve been spending some of my headphones in me time lately listening to the audiobook version of Ken Burns’ Country Music, and when they got to talking about the legendary Hank Williams, I was riveted.

As a country music fan, I’d heard some stories. I knew he lived hard, died young, wrote songs that have lasted for decades, and oozed talent through his personal troubles.

I also knew that he inspired future generations of singers and songwriters, captured the hearts and imaginations of fans, and changed country music through his work.

All of this made it clear that I needed to jump into Williams’ library and then I started looking at the most played songs on his Spotify list and then at the videos on YouTube. Having died on January 1, 1953, it’s safe to say that old Hank never imagined the internet, let alone the way it would provide his songs to listeners on demand long after he was gone. But here we are, so I went through the 10 most played Hank Williams songs on Spotify, found the most-played YouTube videos of those songs, did the math, and put together a Top 10 list.

But first, some quotes about Hank Williams…

“To me, Hank Williams is the first rock-and-roll star.” – Rodney Crowell

“Hank Williams’ music – it just doesn’t go away, for some reason.” – Glen Campbell

“My form of rebellion was starting to play guitar. I was 13. The first song I played was ‘Lovesick Blues’ by Hank Williams.” Phoebe Bridgers

And finally, from Marty Stuart, “Well, it’s hard not to love Hank Williams!”

Hit play on these classics and enjoy the timeless hits of Hank Williams.
