Foo Fighters Prepare to Release Medicine at Midnight in 2021

Foo Fighters fans have been ready and waiting for Medicine at Midnight for months. And in the timeline we’ve been living in, those months feel like years. But now, as we turn to a new year and new hope, we’re also locked in on new rock and roll from the modern legends when Foo Fighters release Medicine at Midnight on February 5, 2021.

Sadly, we didn’t get the Van Tour in 2020. And we didn’t get festival season in 2020. And we didn’t get a big world tour in 2020. And because of all that, we didn’t get new music until late in 2020. It was a mess of a year, and it sucked. All of that sucks. So it’s great to turn the page and have some happiness and something to be excited about (to go along with a vaccine).

In late-2020 we did get the first single from the album, Shame Shame (November 7, 2020) and then got to see the band perform the track on the post-election day episode of Saturday Night Live. It’s a big track. It’s got a new vibe. It went to #1 on the charts. None of that should be a surprise. They are the rock standard (IMO).

As the first taste of what is/was to come, it’s a whistle-wetter that worked.

Here’s Shame Shame.

Foo Fighters – Shame Shame

Talking about the album, Grohl told Los Angeles’ radio station, ALT 98.7 FM that the album is “filled with anthemic, huge, sing-along rock songs.” adding, “It’s got groove” and “To me, it’s our David Bowie’s Let’s Dance record. That’s what we wanted to make, we wanted to make this really up, fun record.” – and if that’s all true, and that’s what we’re going to get, I’m in and can’t wait.

On top of that, drummer Taylor Hawkins “It’s the most pop fantastic album we’ve ever made.” – and while I don’t know exactly what that means, I still want to hear it. With drum loops and pop hooks (maybe?) and whatever else they’ve come up.

That’s the thing about a 25-year career with all kinds of hits and awards and love from critics and fans, you build up the capital to be able to try some new shit on your 10th studio album and your silver anniversary.

Look, I’m a fan and I’ve been a fan for a lot of years now. So yes, I’m excited for new Foo Fighters and I’m adding to a list of things I’m thankful we’re getting in 2021. And I hope I love it. And I hope it’s great. And I hope you love it too. And I can’t wait for a chance to see them play it live.

Offering up the new track and going over some of the plans that got thrown in the trash because of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Foo Fighters’ released a note on social media for everyone…

“Dear Everyone,

It was almost exactly a year ago that we finished recording our “new” record Medicine At Midnight, with a massive world tour planned that would have taken us around the globe celebrating our 25th anniversary as a band. But, well… you know…

So, we waited.
And waited.
And waited.

Until we finally realized that our music is made to be heard, whether it’s in a festival field with 50,000 of our closest friends, or aline in your living room on a Saturday night with a stiff cocktail.

So, the wait is over.

As we say goodbye (Fuck You) to 2020, and flip the calendar page to 2021, let’s ring in the new year with a rocker, “No Son of Mine”.

Pour a drink, turn it up, close your eyes and imagine that festival field blowing up to this.
Because it fucking will.
Happy New Year”

And now, No Son of Mine. Enjoy!

Foo Fighters – No Son of Mine

We know the album is coming on the first Friday of February. We know there are nine songs and it clocks in at 37 minutes long. We know that the band says they’re trying new things. And we know what Shame Shame and No Son of Mine sound like.

It’s not everything to go on – but it’s not nothing and fans of the band, and of rock and roll that sets a bar or drives conversation or gets us ready for the return of live festivals like Osheaga (where the band is scheduled to headline in 2021) should be ready for the music and the impact/fallout, however you see it.
