JJ Wilde Releases Six-Song EP, Wilde

History-making Canadian rock and roller, JJ Wilde is back with a new EP, Wilde, and fans have just been given more fuel for their fires.

The six-song EP is a mix of familiar and fresh, with Mercy and Best Boy anchoring the offering. Add in new cuts (in order of appearance) Bushweed, Off The Rails, Someone Under You, and a cover of Stevie Nicks and Tom Petty’s Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around with The Glorious Sons – and you’ve got it all. Wilde comes in at just under 20 minutes, half as long as her debut album Ruthless, but with the un-said promise that there will be more, and that’s good enough for us.

In a short statement about the EP, JJ Wilde says, “These are feel good songs, fun songs,” adding that they are meant to be “an escape to turn to and reminisce on good times, or daydream of the brighter days ahead.” And ya, we need some of that.

Start with one of the new ones, Off The Rails, and keep going.

JJ Wilde – Off The Rails

The common thread through all of Wilde (and Ruthless before it) is that JJ Wilde is making rock and roll music for these times, but not only for this moment. It’s impossible to call a song that’s been out for less than a year, or less than a day, timeless – that’s not how it works. But, there are elements to these songs, to the stories, that aren’t so 2021 that it’s hard to imagine listening to them again in five or ten years and feeling like they still belong.

The best example of that likely comes on Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around. Already a timeless classic itself, this new presentation featuring The Glorious Sons’ Brett Emmons. This is a classic rock song, recorded in these current times, but without any markers that would tell you it’s a 2021 track. And I like that. I like it in Best Boy too. And I like it in Someone Under You.

In a longer quote than the first, JJ says, “There is a constant theme between all these songs as I reflect on them: freedom. This past year has been testing people in many ways, and freedom is definitely one. So through these songs I have taken myself to a place where anything is possible. Where restrictions don’t exist and it’s all about chasing the next high.”

This tattooed rock and roll storyteller from Kitchener, Ontario has captured chart success, fan love, award nominations, and she’s still only really just getting started. With every new single or even YouTube cover, JJ Wilde seems to be either making history or picking up speed for whatever’s coming next. And this EP is no different. We were happy to get Best Boy and Mercy as singles and they made us want more. And now we have Wilde as the more.

But now that we have Wilde, we want more again – so the cycle continues.

Last summer we said that JJ Wilde ‘Keeps Rocking and She Isn’t Slowing Down’ and she hasn’t. And we don’t expect her to.

Or at least we’re hoping she doesn’t because this is a fun ride to be on, and we’re not ready to get off.

  1. Vincent Boudreault says:

the ep songs are amazing but i wish it was on cd; i know, old school but it would sound great on cd as well as on vinyl or streaming. I could still record the songs on cdr but it’s the same as a professionnal cd. Thanks. vince.
