Mauve Releases New Single ‘Shining Gold’ + 5 Quick Questions

Toronto-based singer Mauve‘s latest release ‘Shining Gold’ is a fun, upbeat, taste of sunshine.

When asked about the song, Mauve responded with, “It’s hard to love yourself if you have a warped sense of who you are supposed to be. Feeling comfortable in your own skin so you can look at yourself in the mirror and say ‘I’m ok with who I am ‘ is the starting point for others realizing that they are okay with being who they are as well.” We think that’s a very healthy way to look at things.

The music video for ‘Shining Gold’ tackles the subject matter with a straightforward attitude. Contrasting doubts about self-image with a catchy bold performance. The singer is joined by freestyle dancers who help to demonstrate the core message.

With over a million streams to date, Mauve is on the upswing and her fans are along for the ride.

We had the opportunity to ask Mauve a few questions and she did a round of 5 Quick Questions for us. Find out what she had to say below.

Q&A

Could you give us some details about you, growing up, and finding your way to music?

“I was constantly inspired by theatrical performances and musicals growing up in downtown Toronto. I love the combination of various forms of art such as design and dance, and considering how these different forms will work into a piece of music I’m making. I’m a very visual person and love all forms of art. I started writing my own song and taught myself how to play the piano and guitar. I gradually started to make my own demos on the computer and posted them online to share them with people. It was so rewarding getting feedback for what I was putting together, which led me to start networking with producers and getting performing gigs.”

Tell me about the writing and recording process for ‘Shining Gold.’

“I am so grateful to have worked with LA-based female production powerhouse LYRE for this song. I knew they would absolutely kill it. It was so important to work with an all-female team for this song because I have never been able to do that with my previous songs. “Shining Gold” is the song that reminds you to put your phone down and embrace the real you. No need for filters or body enhancements, this song is an empowering anthem to celebrate what makes you feel confident. We worked together virtually and I would send them a whole mixture of song references that I was inspired by. They were able to take certain elements of those references, whether it was an instrument or effect, and made it something totally creative and moving for my song ‘Shining Gold’.”

Who would you say has influenced your sound?

“For over a decade I have been a big fan of 90s R&B music, especially the positive messages and smooth vocal harmonies brought from TLC. I love those girls! The deep and emotional vocals of Amy Winehouse and Sia have also played a huge influence on how I sing music. I think it is so inspiring when artists don’t hold back when expressing themselves. Those artists really put so much heart and vulnerability into their lyrics.”

Other thoughts

“I am so excited to have been awarded the Animated Music Video Project Micro-grant from the Mississauga Arts Council (MAC). My upcoming song ‘Another Life’ was chosen for this and I am partnering with a very talented illustrator who was also chosen from MAC to create the music video. It is such a cool collaboration to have them design it! Music videos are so important to promote my music and to animate a vision for my song ‘Another Life’ is exciting and will share my music in a new unique way.”
