Falana is ‘Rising’

Last week Canadian Nigerian, emerging artist Falana released her sophomore EP ‘Rising’. The 7-track Alté record focuses on the empowerment of women. Alté is Nigerian vernacular for ‘alternative’, and we love alternative music.

‘Rising’ is a beautiful blend of soul, pop, R&B and Afrobeat.

The singer, songwriter, and producer has been releasing singles leading up to the complete EP dropping. Check out ‘Joy‘ below.

The first single released from ‘Rising’ was  ‘Joy’. The single was produced by KINGBJMN at the legendary Geejam Studios in Port Antonio, Jamaica. Falana believes that the song was “divinely timed”, explaining that it was birthed just weeks before the whole world went into lockdown.

“Look up, look up, oh I count my blessings, one day at a time, live my life,” she sings on the hook, noting that through the pandemic, the “one day at a time” mentality is one that many of us have been forced to live by.

‘Rising’ is an odyssey taking us through multiple emotions through the music. We’re presented with tales of struggle, romantic love, self-love, and more, through the lens of living in and experiencing different cultures (Canada, Nigeria, the UK, Denmark, Cuba). Falana brings a unique perspective and sound that is truly global. The project’s producers and contributors are another example of the worldwide narrative, including KINGBJMN  from the United States (Future, DJ Snake, Kranium), Dale Virgo from Jamaica (Rihanna, Drake), Tboy of the UK (Burna Boy), Lord Quest from Canada (SchoolBoyQ, Raekwon, Bosco), Davay O from Nigeria (Adekunle Gold), Tyler Richards of the USA.

“It’s funny how things fall together slowly and then all at once. I feel like I’ve really found my voice. And I think once an artist finds their voice, they become unstoppable. I am really excited about the artist I am becoming, and I never want to stop evolving.” – Falana
