Dan Davidson Counts Down with New EP 6 Songs to Midnight

Canadian country music singer-songwriter, Dan Davidson is here again with a collection of six tracks on the aptly named EP, 6 Songs to Midnight.

The CCMA-nominated Alberta boy gives us the vibes we know and love from his country music career across the songs, with some welcome surprises along the way. Energy, of course, is the ingredient we’re most conditioned to expect and appreciate from Dan. He’s given so much of it in his music that we’re ready for it at every turn. And the new EP doesn’t lack that energy.

At 19 minutes, this is a quick play. It zips by, welcoming a repeat listen – and while it’s selfish of me, I do with it was 10 songs to Midnight and about 31:30 of listening time instead.

In no particular order, here are some notes that I put down while I was listening to 6 Songs to Midnight

– Hayley Jensen gives me some real Jennifer Nettles vibes on Really Shouldn’t Drink Around You. And I like it.

Role Models and its ‘E for explicit’ tag was a welcome surprise and I think I really needed it from a country song by a dude who cut his teeth in rock and roll. I’m in.

– The Road Hammers may not be listed on Roll With It – but this is a great collab (with Jason McCoy and Clayton Bellamy listed as co-writers).

– Dan Davidson loves a love song.

– If you press play on 6 Songs to Midnight at 11:41:01 it will end exactly at midnight.

In a press release for 6 Songs to Midnight, Blindspot (track #5) is called “a taste of Davidson’s next chapter”. And if that means we’re going to get more like it in the (near) future, we’re in.

It’s not Found or Barn Burner – which is fine, because we’ll always have those. Heck, Dan Davidson looking to start a new chapter in his career should be one of the least surprising things we’ve heard lately. He’s already been through multiple chapters, genres, times in his life and more. And as a creative, it makes all kinds of sense for him to put a period on one sentence and start a new one.

Most importantly, in this moment, the song hits. The songwriting and performance work together for Davidson as an artist. The instrumentation complements everything and the twang in the background is country through and through.

And like I said in the notes section – Dan Davidson loves a long song.

In that same press release, Davidson says, “I find this record to be a transitional statement as I step towards what feels like a new level in my career as an artist and songwriter.” adding, “I feel like as a writer I really show what I do best – ‘get drunk and fall in love songs.'”

We’ve got no argument with him there. Hit play now to listen to Blindspot.
