JJ Wilde Boots & Hearts 2023 Preview Playlist

Three years back, we went all-in on JJ Wilde when she released her breakthrough album, Ruthless, and now, music festival fans at Boots & Hearts are going to get their chance to see the Ontario rocker in action.

JJ Wilde hits the stage on Friday, August 11, 2023, when the country festival gets a little rock & roll. Before Nickelback headlines the main stage, JJ Wilde will offer direct support for Big Wreck on the Front Porch Stage, and y’all aren’t gonna wanna miss it!

From that first album drop, Wilde has been blowing people’s hair back, setting records, selling tickets, winning awards, and making new fans at every step along the way.

We’ve seen her in action, opening for The Glorious Sons, and headlining the CNE in Toronto. We’ve seen her engage the crowd, play her hits, leave it all on the stage, and make us want more.

JJ Wilde - History - Toronto - December 8

If we had to bet on it, we’d say she’s going to do the same thing at Burl’s Creek this summer.

To get you primed and prepared, we’ve gone through the album, EPs, and singles to put together a 21-track, 1+ hour playlist of JJ Wilde songs for you to dive into. We recommend hitting play and shuffle on the Spotify playlist in this post – or open it with THIS LINK.

Genre: Country
Fans Also Like: Cam, Danielle Bradbery, Ashley McBride
Song: Thicc As Thieves
Notes: Lauren Alaina’s new 6-song EP, Unlocked is here and it features Thicc As Thieves with Lainey Wilson in the last spot on the album. It’s a great way to wrap up the release. It’s fun, has a little dance built in (check out Ms Alaina’s IG), it nods directly to Country Girl Shake It For Me, and it’s fun – did I say that already? The two southern country singers come together for a three-minute light-hearted good time – and as much as we love a slow sad country song – there ain’t nothin’ wrong with a ditty like this that puts a smile on your face. Have fun!

Fans Also Like: Haley Joelle, Rachel Grae, Virginia to Vegas

New Music Spotlight with The Glorious Sons, Jason Isbell and More!

New Music from The Glorious Sons, Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, Charlotte Cardin, Gabby Barrett and Fionn

Welcome back to The New Music Spotlight. This time out we’ve got rock, country and pop coming together in a list of 5 new songs we’re recommending you give a listen to.

It starts with Canadian rock, it’s got a taste of the south, and it wraps up with twin-pop from the west coast. Variety is the spice of life, and this list.

Have a listen, tell us which song(s) you’re adding to your playlists and remember – if you find a new song or artist you’re into, tell a friend so they can love it too.

Ready? Let’s go!

Artist: The Glorious Sons
Genre: Rock
Fans Also Like: Sam Roberts Band, Royal Tusk, The Beaches
Song: Mercy Mercy
Notes: The Glorious Sons are back on the NMS with Mercy Mercy, and we’re glad for it. In talking about the new single, lead singer Brett Emmons said: “Mercy Mercy is my own quiet little prayer. It’s me fighting through some twisted process of self-forgiveness and acceptance. It’s a glimpse into my inner dialogue, however hilarious or concerning that might sound. A friend told me that this album sounds like someone at war in their own mind. In that context, I think this song is about faith in oneself, and one’s future—even if the past is always still there.” – It’s always nice to get a little insight – and it makes sense. Give it a listen and see for yourself!

Links: Web / Facebook / Twitter / Instagram / Spotify / Apple

Artist: Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit
Genre: Rock
Fans Also Like: Drive-By-Truckers, Whiskeytown, Justin Townes Earle
Song: This Ain’t It
Notes: From the very start of This Ain’t It, we’ve got the drawl we’re looking for, the guitar twang, the everything, all packaged together in one rock and roll song. The musicianship (as expected) is wonderful. The songwriting checks all of the Jason Isbell boxes. And the sound, the one that brings us in every time, is dripping on every note of a 6-minute and 15-second track. Enjoy!

Links: Web / Facebook / Twitter / Instagram / Spotify / Apple

Artist: Charlotte Cardin
Genre: Pop
Fans Also Like: Ingrid St-Pierre, Alicia Moffet, Jonathan Roy
Song: 99 Nights
Notes: Canadian STAR, Charlotte Cardin kicks off her brand new EP with the title track here. 99 Nights headlines a 4-song release and with pop energy and sounds layered with an almost desperate plea for answers and attention – she’s got us hooked from track 1 right here. Here’s hoping you turn this one up!

Links: Web / Facebook / Twitter / Instagram / Spotify / Apple

Artist: Gabby Barrett
Genre: Country
Fans Also Like: Tenille Arts, Hailey Whitters, Ingrid Andress
Song: Glory Days
Notes: Glory Days is a celebration. It’s happy. It’s everything I needed when I hit play that I didn’t know I was looking for. “This is as good as it gets, I don’t know what I would change.” is the simplest, nicest sentiment anyone could express about their life. And even if those moments sometimes feel fleeting, Gabby Barrett has captured them in a country song that I want more of.

Links: Web / Facebook / Twitter / Instagram / Spotify / Apple

Artist: Fionn
Genre: Pop
Fans Also Like: Fake Shark, Michaela Slinger, Madisyn Gifford
Song: TAKE ME OUT!
Notes: Fionn has released a brand new, 12-track, 35-minute, full-length album and we’re kicking it off with song #8 – TAKE ME OUT!.  These sister singers are in fine form here, and it’s especially cool for us to listen and love as we’ve tracked and talked to and written about over the years as they’ve grown and expanded their stories and sound. Get in!

Foo Fighters, But Here We Are Album Review

If grief-rock is a genre, Foo Fighters just released the newest and rawest record in the collection. But Here We Are is anchored in loss, love, letting go, holding on and the complicated space in between.

After the sad and surprising death of Taylor Hawkins, I had no idea what to expect from the future of Foo Fighters. Each and every one of the band and crew and extended Foo family had certainly experienced loss before (some more publicly than others), but this hit right at home, as deep in the heart as it could have.

What I’m not sure I expected was a 10-track record that takes us directly through the path of dealing with that loss.

At its best, music takes us to places that make us feel. The songs take us inside the writers and singers and players. They turn into soundtracks for reels of memories you might not have been prepared to think about. The words tell one story but become projected onto another story of our own. I feel that a lot on this album.

Early in the album, we get Under You and Hearing Voices back-to-back and it hits me like a ton of bricks. I’m taken back to days of not being able to move or eat or sleep or think.

Both songs vividly take me to the fears and feelings I had when I lost both my dad and step-brother. Under You gets me right away with the sensation of looking for lost faces, all the while knowing they won’t be there. I remember doing it. Searching. Thinking I saw them. Wishing I had. And then knowing I hadn’t and I couldn’t, and I never would again. And Hearing Voices reminds me of the deep sadness of knowing I’d never hear their voices again – and the fear that I’d forget what they sounded like at all. I’ve spent a lot of time trying to hear them in my head so I don’t lose them. If you know, you know.

While Taylor is front of mind for all Foo Fighters fans, Dave Grohl’s mother also passed away in 2022, adding another layer of loss to this album and the songs herein. The Teacher, a 10-minute epic in the #9 slot on the record, feels especially dedicated to her. Before she was a celebrated mother of a rockstar, Virginia was a teacher and in every interview and appearance, we saw the love between her and her son. We can feel the same love, clothed in rock and roll here.

Immediately following The Teacher, is Rest. It is the perfect end to this record. This unintended therapy session. This 48-minute minefield of feelings. With all due respect to Tom Petty, goodbye is the hardest part. And Rest is the closest we get on this album. It’s where I fought back tears the hardest. It’s one I can’t imagine having been easy to write or sing or even think about playing live.

Sometimes a song is just a song. Sometimes an album is just something you put on while you work or hang out or whatever. And sometimes it’s more.

But Here We Are feels like more to me. From start to finish we’re all in this together. We all know what’s happening and what we’re going through. It’s a shared journey, this process of listening to the band deal with their grief, of being reminded of our own, of being together, no matter where we are.

At this time of this review, I’ve listened to But Here We Are a bunch. Mostly on repeat. Sometimes going back to specific songs. I’ve tried to put myself in the shoes of Dave, Pat, Nate, Chris and Rami. I’ve tried to be in their feelings. I’ve been in my own. I’ve tried to place this in the Foo Fighters catalogue, but I’m struggling.

There was Foo Fighters before Taylor. There was Foo Fighters with Taylor. And now there’s Foo Fighters after Taylor. It’s not somewhere I’d ever imagined we’d be. But here we are…

2. Under You
3. Hearing Voices
4. But Here We Are

8 Don’t Miss Artists at Canadian Music Week 2023

Canadian Music Week is getting ready for 2023, and Toronto is getting ready for CMW. And if you’re getting set to strap on your wristband, you need to start your planning!

Artists, showcases, and big shows will be spread out at venues all over the city from Monday to Saturday. It starts early and goes late. And we mean late. So find a way to nap or get some extra caffeine and pick your spots. It ain’t easy, but it’s a whole lot of fun.

One of the very best things about Canadian Music Week is the opportunity to see artists that you’ve never heard of, and having them capture your heart, blow you away, make you dance, or any combination of those things and more. Yes, a chance to see a superstar like Scott Weiland is something we’ll never forget, but we’ll also never forget seeing JJ Shiplett for the first time, late, late at night in the beloved basement Dakota Tavern.

To help get you set for 2023’s CMW, we’ve got a list of 8 artists at 7 shows at 7 venues that we are stamping as recommended. Some will play longer, some will play shorter. But we think all of them should be on your list. Now, with that said, this is a festival and you’re going to have to make some scheduling decisions, and we haven’t really done a perfect job of making that easy on you with this list. Sorry ’bout that.

The names we’ve listed are alphabetical, A to V. It’s pop, rock, country, and it’s 8 entertaining options for your CMW 2023 diary.

Have a look, have a listen, dig a little deeper, and if you find yourself out and about at Canadian Music Week 2023, check them out.

Get your CMW wristband (or other registration) now if you want it – CLICK HERE!

Country music fans know ANNIKA for her powerful voice and emotional connection through her sound. It started with Leaving Thomas, and continues now on her solo journey with tracks like I Really Don’t Want To and Strangers. She’s got it. A lot of it. And you don’t want to miss it!

Badflower

Thursday, June 8 @ The Axis Club (722 College St, Toronto)

On a Thursday night in the city, you’re going to have a lot of choices, and we suggest (strongly) that you put Badflower on your to-do list. On the show with BRKN Love and VIOLET NIGHT, Badflower is going to put it all out there at The Axis Club, and you should really be there to check out!

Dead Levee

Tuesday, June 6 @ The Wheatsheaf Tavern (667 King St W, Toronto)

Canadian rockers Dead Levee are headed to Toronto’s oldest bar to play rock and roll on a CMW Tuesday night and we’re into it. These fellas are stage ready at all times and Toronto needs to be ready for them when they show up with Mecca of Stank, The Jailbirds, Spendo and Neomi!

NIIVA

Friday, June 9 @ The Paddock Tavern (178 Bathurst St, Toronto)

Pop singer-songwriter, NIIVA is a treat, and she’s bringing herself and her show to The Paddock on a Friday night for a little CMW musical party. Be ready for Friends live, and stick around to see if there’s some new music from NIIVA that we can look forward to pushing her to the next level!

Texas King & Bleeker

Friday, June 9 @ The Great Hall (1087 Queen St W, Toronto)

Performing on the bill together, along with The Press, we’ve got Bleeker coming in with new music and Texas King coming off of a tour and back to CMW. We’ve seen Bleeker. We’ve seen Texas King. It’s fun. It gets sweaty. It’s rock and roll baby. Have fun!

Virginia to Vegas

Wednesday, June 7 @ The El Mocambo (464 Spadina Ave, Toronto)

Virginia to Vegas plays at the iHeart CMW kickoff party with Shawn Desman, Alyssa Reid, and Noelle. It’s a stacked card, but Derik is high on our list always, so he gets the hype this time around. It’s going to be a poppy good time at a cool venue!

15 Versions of Bonnie Raitt’s I Can’t Make You Love Me

I Can’t Make You Love Me isn’t Bonnie Raitt’s biggest hit, it doesn’t live at the tip-top of award-winning singles that climbed the charts – but 30 years after its release, it’ll still break your damn heart.

Like many in my generation, the Luck of the Draw album was my introduction to Raitt. And she nailed it. And all these years later, podcasts (60 Songs that Explain the 90s), writers (us and others) and artists (listed below & more) are still all-in on Bonnie Raitt, all-in on I Can’t Make You Love Me, and the life she brought to the song then, and the way it makes us all feel even now.

If how much other artists love a song and want to sing their version and share it with their audience and the world is any indication of the power and importance of that song, we’ve got an important one here. And there’s no argument to be had.

Before he sang his cover of I Can’t Make You Love Me on Stern, Charlie Puth talked about the song, including a bit where he said, “You don’t know what you want your heart to feel when you hear this because it’s so beautiful musically but it’s such a painful message to hear that you can’t make somebody love you. And I just don’t know if there will ever be another song that’s written like this. I think this song took the slot.” And he’s right.

Now, check out as many versions of I Can’t Make You Love Me as your heart can stand, and leave a comment telling us which you loved most.

Foo Fighters: Preparing Music For Concerts – Thoughts & Reactions

Foo Fighters made their most public return since the sudden and heartbreaking death of Taylor Hawkins with their livestream rehearsal, Foo Fighters: Preparing Music for Concerts on Sunday, May 21.

It was a full band run-through of hits and new songs. It was a circle of music. An introduction and a visit with old pals. A chance to sit in the music in memory and weirdness and happiness and newness.

I’ve loved this band for 25 years. I’ve seen them live and bought socks as merch. I’ve got original debut album record store collateral framed in my office. I’ve played them loud on the radio, Spotify, YouTube, CD and vinyl. I’ve sung their songs at karaoke bars. I’ve introduced my kid to their catalogue. And we keep going.

And here we are now, starting a new chapter that doesn’t ignore or rewrite or edit the past but moves the story forward.

Here’s what I was thinking while I watched…

I’m Excited.

It’s Weird.

The Drummer bit was fun, cute – but also, I don’t know if I was ready for a joke about it. But the band likes to joke. And who am I to tell them not to do what makes them happy?

But also, yay an official full-time drummer in Josh Freese. Someone who grew up near Taylor, knew Taylor, knows the band, and now joins them.

All My Life is like a familiar old hoodie that I can wear and also bob my head to and I am not upset about that choice to kick things off.

Seeing Dave and Pat, and the rest of the band, smile and laugh, made me really happy like instantly. I needed to see that. After losing Taylor, a friend and bandmate and brother. After losing Kurt. After losing friends and family and peers we don’t know by name, they have made the decision to keep going. With joy.

Rescued and Under You are still weird to me as new Foo Fighters music, but they work. They fit here.

The banter and jokes and stories feel like a peek behind the curtain. And it’s not the first time we’ve had that from Foo Fighters. But it’s still fun. Still light-hearted. Still like it’s just a group of friends that would be fun to be in. To be around. To absorb their vibe by osmosis is as good as it ever was.

I miss Taylor Hawkins. I miss seeing him smiling and laughing and joking with his friends.

More new – Nothing At All. New is good. New is fun.

Watching and listening to Josh talk to Dave about Monkey Wrench feels like a moment that we didn’t need to see because it’s just band dudes talking about band stuff, but here we’re at and we get it and it’s just another reminder that this is a work in progress that we’re dealing with. It’s the real BTS stuff.

I like librarian Dave in his glasses being the dad-mode rockstar he’s transitioned into from the sweaty drummer kid in Seattle.

For a while here I just got sucked in. Watching. Listening. My favourite band is on my screen and it feels right.

The reality that every member of Foo Fighters is 50+ is a reminder that we’re closer to the end than the beginning. That this is my band, not my kid’s band. But I don’t care. I will have the music forever. Fans will listen to the new music and the old music. Fans will see the new shows and remember the ones they saw before.

I could have watched more. I was happy in this stream. I was happy watching this black and white rehearsal from 606. I’m selfish and want more.

If I have access to this thing for 72 hours, I’m going to watch it again. (note: I already have watched it again as you’re reading this)

Last one… I’m excited for the new album, But Here We Are, dropping June 2, 2023. I hope y’all are too.

Faith Hill Top 10 – by the Numbers

Faith Hill is a superstar, no matter how long it’s been since we heard a new song, saw her on stage, or the spotlight shone on her at its brightest.

Her catalogue is packed with tracks that we can all still sing along to. There are US Country chart #1 hits (9) in her solo career + her duets with Tim McGraw. There are 8 more in the Top 5 and that still doesn’t capture all of the songs that we love and make us smile, cry, tap our toes and sing.

A couple of years ago we celebrated Faith Hill’s birthday by putting together a list of our personal Top 20 song selections – but today, we’re letting the math do the work with Faith Hill’s Top 10 – by the numbers.

As always, we started with the ‘Popular’ list on Spotify, took down the numbers, went over to YouTube and took those numbers (from Official Music Video, and Official Audio releases only). Then, we added, sorted, double-checked and here we are.

Unsurprisingly, Faith’s YouTube channel isn’t as packed as some of her peers, so there weren’t as many options to add up, and some songs don’t have the numbers we might have expected. But, the numbers are the numbers, and that’s what we’re presenting here.

There are 10 songs, 3 with Tim McGraw, and all of them just waiting for you to hit play and listen.

And when you’re done, drop a comment telling us which song you love most, or which Faith Hill song(s) you love, but aren’t on this list.

Enjoy!

2023 Boots & Hearts Day-to-Day Lineup & Don’t Miss Acts

The 2023 Boots & Hearts lineup has been out here with eyes on it for a while now. Tickets are sold (and selling – click here) and that’s because folks wanna see the artists at the four-day festival.

This year we’re getting a little more rock with our country on Friday when Nickelback, Big Wreck, JJ Wilde and more come on down to Burl’s Creek.

Note: It’s a little taste of WayHome (RIP) at Boots. But really, it’s just music that fits together for an audience that is going to have A LOT of fun!

In this post, we’ve got the day-to-day and stage-by-stage lineup breakdown. BUT, we’ve also added seven (7) Don’t Miss picks from Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Thursday is all Don’t Miss because it’s a p-a-r-t-y. Always.

Our picks don’t include headliners. That’s too easy, don’t miss them. They do include personal favourites, artists we’ve seen and covered and told y’all about. Acts that put on a helluva show and we really really think you deserve to see for yourselves.

Now, because we don’t have the timed schedule yet, there are a couple of picks here that have the chance to overlap – band while we’re crossing our fingers that it doesn’t happen – it’s part of festival life. We’ve all been there.

Have a look at the lineup and our Don’t Miss picks and leave a comment telling us who is on your Don’t Miss / Can’t Miss list for Boots & Hearts 2023!

2023 Boots & Hearts Day-to-Day Lineup & Don’t Miss Acts!

Thursday, August 10

★ Nickelback
★ Hardy ***
★ Bailey Zimmerman
★ Cory Marks
★ Manny Blu
Front Porch Stage
☆ Big Wreck
☆ JJ Wilde ***
☆ Ashland Craft
☆ Teigen Gayse
☆ Parker Graye

Don’t Miss: HARDY when he takes the direct support opening spot for Nickelback on the most rock and roll night in Boots and Hearts history. This dude writes everything for everyone, including himself – and it’s gonna be a party.

Don’t Miss: JJ Wilde on the Front Porch Stage. Her performance is a good time, her hits are top-shelf, her whole damn thing has had us hooked since day 1 and if you miss this chance to see her rock out we’ll be sad for you.

Saturday, August 12

Main Stage
★ Keith Urban
★ Dallas Smith ***
★ Lauren Alaina
★ Blanco Brown
★ Adam Doleac
Front Porch Stage
☆ Breland
☆ Seaforth
☆ Devon Cole
☆ Raquel Cole ***
☆ Graham Scott Fleming

Don’t Miss: Dallas Smith. DUH!

Don’t Miss: Raquel Cole when she takes to the Front Porch Stage. It’s been 7 years since we first saw Raquel at B&H and we bet that day that we’d see her again – and if you want to see why we said that back in 2016, don’t miss her on Saturday.

Sunday, August 13

Main Stage
★ Tim McGraw
★ Riley Green
★ Travis Denning
★ Kylie Morgan
★ Matt Lang ***
Front Porch Stage
☆ Tyler Joe Miller
☆ Tim & The Glory Boys
☆ Dan Davidson ***
☆ Alli Walker
☆ Nice Horse ***

Don’t Miss: Matt Lang if you’ve ever danced or sang to a Dwight Yoakam jam, you won’t want to miss Mr. Lang. The 2019 Top of the Country winner has a killer voice and whether he plays the Yoakam dance floor medley or not, you’re gonna be in for a treat.

Don’t Miss: Dan Davidson when he has a boatload of fun on stage at Burls Creek. This dude is as DIY as they come, and as dedicated to his craft as they get. From rock to country, he’s done it and has it in him. He’s going to go all out, and you can join him.

Don’t Miss: Nice Horse when 4 badass women come together to play, sing, and shred on the Front Porch Stage. We love them. Always have. And if we have half the fun we’ve had in the past when they play their set, we’ll have been given a fan-friggin-tastic show.

New Music Spotlight with Foo Fighters, Sam Roberts Band and More!

New Music from Foo Fighters, Sam Roberts Band, Ralph, Jade Eagleson, and Jane’s Party

The New Music Spotlight’s here – and in this edition we’ve got new rock, pop, and country music lined up for y’all.

It’s big big acts and favourites together in a list of five tracks that we firmly believe deserve a listen. So they are here, and you are here, and all there’s left for you to do is hit play and give them a go.

And remember, if you find a new song you love, share it with your friends and us so we can hear it too.

Ready? Let’s go!

Artist: Foo Fighters
Genre: Rock
Fans Also Like: Queens of the Stoneage, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains
Song: Under You
Notes: Under You is more new Foo. Honestly, it’s still weird to get excited about new Foo Fighters music. I don’t know if that will ever stop – but here we are and here it is. Everything is here, the sound, the vibe, all of it. I turned it up. I listened on repeat. I’m emotional, but enjoying every second of it.

ps. Does anyone else get a little Flavor of the Week hiding underneath?

Artist: Sam Roberts Band
Genre: Rock
Fans Also Like: The Beaches, The Trews, Sloan
Song: I Dream Of You
Notes: Sam Roberts Band is a long-time favourite, a Canadian treasure, and 21 years after Brother Down, I’m still all in. I Dream Of You is sweet. It’s not a rocker. It’s not a banger. It’s lovely. It’s guitars and it’s vibey. I get a Beatles feeling. I get a feeling like I want to see SRB live again soon. I get happy memories. I get it all in a brand-new song. What more could I want?

Links: Web / Facebook / Twitter / Instagram / Spotify / Apple

Artist: Ralph
Genre: Pop
Fans Also Like: Fickle Friends, Shura, Betty Who
Song: Pain Relief
Notes: Our love for Ralph is oversized. Pain Relief reminds us of all of the things we’ve been in on for years. The songwriting, the beats in the back, the voice, the video, the promise of more coming on the 222 EP (June 30, 2023) – it all comes together here in just over two and a half minutes. Love.

Links: Web / Facebook / Twitter / Instagram / Spotify / Apple

Artist: Jade Eagleson
Genre: Country
Fans Also Like: Matt Lang, Tim Hicks, Madeline Merlo
Song: Honky Talkin’
Notes: Canadian country honky-tonker, Jade Eagleseon plays into everything he is on Honky Talkin’ and it’s going to get played a lot, heard by a lot of country music fans, and played on stage when you see Jade next. The voice that won him the emerging artist showcase at Boots & Hearts in 2017 is as strong as ever, and now we all know it. And we’ll keep knowing it, because Honky Talkin’ ain’t the end – you can bet on that. Enjoy!

Links: Web / Facebook / Twitter / Instagram / Spotify / Apple

Artist: Jane’s Party
Genre: Rock
Fans Also Like: Yukon Blonde, Fast Romantics, The Elwins
Song: Ships On An Ocean
Notes: The first time we saw Jane’s Party, they opened for Sam Roberts Band in Toronto at the CNE – so it’s perfect to have them both on this list together. Ships On An Ocean is going to be a sing-along song before long. When I hear it, I know I’m gonna be here tapping my foot and spending a few minutes just happy being in music, and there aren’t many places better than that.
