To Define, Or Not To Define, That Is The Question…

As a dude who writes a lot of words to make a living – I live and die by the definitions of those words. Spelling isn’t as important as it used to be now that Google shows me a red line whenever it thinks I’m an idiot and grammar and I have been fighting for so long now that I sometimes just make up my own rules. But the words I use have to mean the right thing if any of what I scribble down is going to make sense.
In life though there are times when things just can’t be defined. Or maybe they are best not to be defined.
When things are working. When they are good. When you aren’t thinking about a definition being necessary. However, that’s usually when someone will ask you to define it.
My day to day happiness and what has made me that way doesn’t need to be defined. I don’t think so. Some days there isn’t going to be a great explanation for the smile on my face. Or the frown if that’s the case. Some days I’m not going to want to share the reason. That’s perfectly fair I think.
Have you ever just caught yourself smiling and tried to think about why – but you can’t find an answer. I think it’s awesome. And it’s undefinable.
I think I like the dynamic. I like knowing what I’m trying to say when I start putting words together. That’s as close to art as i get. It’s my craft. I have to make it fun from time to time. But in my life I don’t always want or need that control.
I guess what I’m trying to say in all of this is that it’s perfectly okay not to define everything all the time. There are times when you may need to, it’s life, it’s going to happen. But there are times when you won’t. And that’s not a bad thing at all.
