My Mom Is Awesome – Happy Birthday!

Happy Birthday Mom!

Happy Birthday Mom!

Today is my mom’s birthday and since she recently subscribed to the blog there’s a strong chance that at some point she’ll be reading this.

My mom is pretty awesome. Like salt of the earth. She’s the kind of person I want to be. If you’ve met her you know what I mean. She’s giving, calm, strong and steady. She taught me what it means to be charitable with my time and effort as well as my money. She showed me that doing the right thing isn’t always easy for anyone involved, but it’s still the right thing.

There is no way to quantify the lives that she has touched through her work at the library, and daycare and community children’s programs and the church. She has dedicated her life (my words, not hers) to helping others. I can see the joy on her face when she talks about the positive results that have come from her work. I can hear the smile on her face when we talk on the phone about the things she is excited and passionate about. It is amazing and it gives me hope.

My mom is also the one who taught me that my faith is my own personal work in progress and has always encouraged me in my discoveries and has humored my theories as they have popped up.

For most of her life she has been an educator. Either in a library working with children, at a daycare supplimenting the elementary school system, working one-on-one with children with physical and learning dissabilities or working with parents and other educators to prepare them for the work that they do.

However, over the last 10 years she has also been a student. In September 2001 she and I both started college. She went on to receive her dimploma at Loyalist College and parlayed that into the start of a university degree from Trent which she finished in the spring of 2009.

It may sound a little backwards, but I’m very proud of her.

While she will tell you that she’s not perfect, I think she’s pretty effin’ awesome.

I’m lucky to have her.

Morning Honey – I was awake at 5 am wondering how I got to be 50 years old. Then I remembered: being a kid, going to school, raising kids, going to school (I am noticing a pattern here!). Anyway, I decide to treat myself to a cup of coffee in bed before getting ready for work, I check my BB (great new fangled inventions if I say so myself) and there you are wishing me a happy birthday. Thank you for that. And I have to say, one of the most awesome things about being me is having you…. (and your brother, steps, etc, etc, etc). Love you, talk soon, Mom
