Things I Like To Do With Bacon…

The new year is here and I promised more content and more bacon… so here we go.What follows are some of my favourite ways to enjoy bacon as well as some pretty slick suggestions from my friends across the internets.Bacon is awesome. Bacon is tasty. Bacon goes with pretty much everything.

Wrapped Around Stuff: Yup, one of my very favourite ways to enjoy the taste of bacon is when it’s wrapped around something else that I love the taste of. In 2011 I was lucky (and I do mean lucky) enough to have bacon wrapped cherries, sausages, dates, water chestnuts and chicken. Not one of those options was bad. In fact, they were all amazing.

Note: The cherries were the most recent and I have been craving them ever since I had them at Sam and Steph’s Christmas Open Haus.

On a Burger: Bacon belongs on a burger. That’s just the way it is. From the Baconator to the Banquet Burger at your local diner, everyone has a bacon burger on the menu – and they should! If you’re a meat eater and you’re ordering a burger there is no reason not to add a few slices of well prepared bacon.

As the B in a BLT: The bacon in a BLT is arguably the most important piece in any multi ingredient sandwich. When you have cold, crisp lettuce and fresh, ripe tomato and great bread (preferably toasted) you are well on your way to a tasty lunch. But, it is most definitely the bacon that makes it all come together. Warm, crispy, meaty bacon takes this from a garden salad on toast to a sandwich that people beg for!

In Bits on a Salad: Salad is nice and all. But you don’t make friends with it… unless you add bacon! That’s right, bacon bits also
make the list as one of my favourite ways to enjoy the joy of bacon. Big ones or small ones, it doesn’t matter. I just want them to be crunchy and real! So bring on the lettuce, tomato, onion, peppers and other veggie type stuff – and a healthy serving of bacon bits to go with it!

Note II: I wrote a piece that got some love back in September and a lot of people stopped in with comments and recipes and suggestions for bacon. Check it out HERE!

In a Grilled Cheese: I know I already have a sandwich on the list, but can you really blame me for adding another classic to the list? Bacon is fantastic addition to any grilled cheese sammich. I don’t care what kind of cheese or bread you’re using. All I want is 3 (or more) strips of bacon placed gently and with great purpose in the middle of that son of a gun!

As a Part of a Balanced Breakfast: That’s right. Bacon is the perfect breakfast food. Whether you’re having eggs (scrambled, over easy, omelet or otherwise) or pancakes or French toast or a fruit cup, bacon should come on the side. It can be chewy or crunchy, that’s up to you. You can have a lot or a little (a lot is better). You can even eat it on your toast. No matter how you add it you are a winner.

I also got a bunch of great suggestions and ideas from friends. Here are a couple of them!

Christa Froome: Candied bacon. Toss 1 lb of bacon in 3/4 of a cup of brown sugar (I also add chili powder), place on a cookie sheet lined with tinfoil, bake at 350 for aprox 20-25 min.

Kristen Göetz: Heh. My friend has an eatery and he makes bacon sugar cookies. People love ’em.

Madeleine Kassinger: i make my maple bacon cupcakes. its one of my most popular ones. its like breakfast but better. (If you’re ever in Oshawa, Ontario you need to stop by and get one of these cupcakes at Mad Cafe!)

Cole Abrams: A pound at a time, upon one bagel. Enough said

Duane McMurray: wrapped around fresh scallops, brown suger’d and baked to deliciousness

Katrina Giddings: Fry it then dip it in chocolate and ENJOY!

Shannon LeBlanc: You can put it on toast, with peanut butter! Yum!

Regina Sy: Please, please, please let one of the things be: “cover my entire body in it and then sunbathe

Josh McMILLAN: Sugar cookies with bacon and hot sauce. Mmm

Allegra Sheppardieu: ‎Brian-Sean Shepherd has a recipe that uses Jack Daniels and Dr. Pepper. I can get that for you if you want! (I’m very excited to get my hands on this recipe)

As you can see there are a lot of ways that a lot of people enjoy bacon. I’m not here to tell you that any one of them are better than the rest… all I can do is provide you with all of the information I have available!

Enjoy!
