I Choose Me…

I Choose Me… maybe the 2nd most famous and potent lines from 90210 – right behind May The Bridges I Burn Light The Way.

It’s a classic moment when Kelly has to make up her mind about Dylan and Brandon. It’s the heart wrenching conclusion to years of wonder. It’s the peak of the first real dramatic teenage TV love triangle. It’s awesome.

If you don’t know what I’m talking about take 30 seconds and watch this clip to refresh your memory.

If you still don’t know then you aren’t old enough to remember the original Beverly Hills 90210. However, that doesn’t mean that you can’t stick around.

I was sitting here thinking about things and my life and the goal of being a better me in 2012 and suddenly I was slapped in the face with this quote. It really does seem that if I’m going to be a better, more awesome me this year I am going to have to choose me from time to time.

I’ve already done it with the cigarettes. As I write this post I am 13 days into my quitting quest with no intentions on slowing down. In fact, I made a short little 40 second video to update my life and progress – have a look.

Since the new year began I’m also dedicating more time to creating content for the blog, for photojunkie.ca and in my idea bank. It’s a great feeling to get back to something that I have loved forever. I started on the internet without any direction or clue as to what I was doing. And I’ll be honest, I have a few more clues as to what I’m doing – but some days I’m clueless and directionless. And I’m okay with that.

I’m not perfect, but I’m getting better. Every time I choose me. My best interests. What makes me happy. What helps me grow. What turns my crank. Every time I make that decision I take a step towards being a better me.

That’s an exciting prospect when you stop to think about it. I’m going to be 30 years old in a few days and I’m still getting better. That’s the kind of shit that’s almost inspirational!

In the spirit of everyone being a better them I encourage you to choose you too.

Note: Choosing you should be done with regard for the feelings of others. This is the year of being a better me, not the year of me being a douche.

So whether you’re looking to quit smoking, start writing, get in better shape, eat healthier, sing louder, dance more, read a couple books, create more art or just smile bigger – this is your time.

We can all do it together, just like Kelly. All we have to do is look Dylan and Brandon in the eyes and tell them, I Choose Me

You can do it. You’re awesome.
