What Does Pride Mean To You? #Toronto #Pride

It’s Pride Week in Toronto. A wonderful time when everyone can celebrate what they love about themselves and each other in the LGBT community.

And if you’re not okay with that… well you probably should just stop reading now.

That was your spoiler alert Mayor Ford.

First, remember the good old days, 2 years ago.

Mayor David Miller, What Does Pride Mean To You?

There, I’m done with politiking. I really don’t like it all that much.

I’m here because I love Pride. And more specifically, what Pride means and represents and acknowledges: Equality, Rights, Love, Expression and Short Shorts.

Or long shorts, or no shorts, whatever the hell shorts you want to wear. I don’t care. Just like I don’t care who you’re sleeping with.

Pride is a party. A lot of people will treat it as such. And I hope that they have an amazing time all day and all night all week and all weekend long. I used to go to some pretty awesome Pride parties in Ottawa on boats and in bars at at City Hall.

Fact: I volunteered to take my turn in the dunk tank at Ottawa Pride about 5 years ago. It was awesome. We raised money for AIDS research and everyone just had a generally great time.

Fact 2: This year I am super proud and excited that an awesome teenager named Connor will be out and enjoying the festivities. I first met him years ago when I visited his sister, and their entire family quickly adopted me as one of their own. Including Connor who became another sometimes little brother in my super extended, wild and wacky, family of life. He is polite, kind, funny, talented and adorable. And he is also strong and brave and has told part of his very, very recent coming out story in a great YouTube video that you should all watch. I love Connor and his family and this video is proof that they are amazing.

Coming Out: Connor’s Story

Here’s the thing. I don’t care who you are or who you sleep with or want to sleep with or like sleeping with. If you are awesome, you deserve to have awesome things. And even if you aren’t awesome (although I’m sure all of you are) you deserve to be treated with respect and without prejudice based on your sexuality.

Smile big. Party hard. March Proud. Be awesome.

Happy Pride!

To me, Pride week has always been a fun thing to head to if I could make it. It means a whole lot more to me this year – it means PRIDE – in who you are, in what you stand for, in my family, in being your true self. I am so PROUD of Con, and I can’t wait to go to Pride Parade and share in the love!!
