The Beaches – The Professional [EP Review]

The Beaches, the quartet of bad-ass rock and roll women from Toronto’s east end, are back with a brand new EP, The Professional, and we’re here for it!

We’ve been in on the band since we saw them on stage at The Phoenix at the WayHome holiday party in November 2016, and since then, our love has only grown. We were all in on Late Show in October 2017. And last year we had The Beaches on our list of artists we were excited to hear new music from.

The Professional doesn’t disappoint.

Yes, we wish it was twice as long, but that hasn’t stopped me from hitting play for multiple repeat listens already.

With two tracks we already know from radio and streaming playlists (Fascination and Snake Tongue), the EP is a tight combination of new listens and recent favourites. Desdemona, Want What You Got, and Lame all fit in this group of songs in sound and tone. There’s no disconnect in any piece of the quick 16-minute listen. And we appreciate that.

Note: It’s also exciting as hell that The Rolling Stones concert at Burl’s Creek Event Grounds is back on, and The Beaches and The Glorious Sons have been tapped as opening acts for the rock and roll legends!

Jordan, Kylie, Eliza, and Leandra have given multiple shout outs to the EP’s producer, Jacknife Lee in the lead-up to the release. And while it’s well earned by Lee and humble of the band to go out of their way to give the love, they need to take credit here too.

The Professional is short, but it hits hard. It’s a rock and roll EP that has us singing along, imagining the songs live, and wondering which track is lined up next for radio. The performances on the record are tight. Their voices sound great. The songwriting continues to grow as these artists and writers gain more experience penning tracks and living life. On the overall, it’s what we were hoping to hear. And we hope there’s more coming soon to follow it.

It doesn’t hurt that since its release in early April, Snake Tongue has put itself in the conversation for my favourite song of 2019. I’ve listened to it a lot. I sing along. It rocks and it’s catchy and witty and poignant, and I’m into it!

The 2018 Juno winners for Breakthrough Group Of The Year haven’t slowed down a bit. They’re touring schedule has included dates all over Canada and the United States. They’ve now released their second major label recording, and we fully expect to hear a lot more from them in the future.

If you haven’t done so already, you can go ahead and add The Beaches to the list of bands that are making sure rock and roll is in good hands in Canada.

And if you’re like us, they’re high on that list.

Hit play on The Professional now and leave a comment telling us which song is your favourite from the new EP.
