Will Foo Fighters Play the El Mocambo in Toronto on May 21, 2020?

At the risk of getting too True Detective or It’s Always Sunny conspiracy levels of nuts, I really do think there’s a chance we’ll see Foo Fighters on a newly reopened El Mocambo stage on Thursday, May 21, 2020.

Let’s lay it all out!

In November 2019, Foo Fighters are announced as a headliner at Boston Calling 2020 and will be scheduled to play Friday, May 22.

January 1, 2020, marks the start of Foo Fighters 25th anniversary year.

On January 14, Foo Fighters post to their social channels that 2020 is going to be “an INSANE year full of some seriously crazy shit…”

In late-January Dave Grohl records an episode of the Bill Simmons Podcast for The Ringer while at the Sundance Film Festival. That podcast was released on February 12 and in the video version, we see Grohl wearing an El Macambo Since 1948 t-shirt.

Two days later, on February 14, The El Mocambo posts on their social media channels that fans can pre-order the shirt and get it “hot off the press in the next few weeks before anyone else…well except #davegrohl”

Also on February 14, El Mo owner Michael Wekerle is quoted by Now Toronto as saying the venue will open “very soon.” And general manager Andy Curran says the venue will be hosting Canadian Music Week events.

Note: Canadian Music Week 2020 runs May 19 – 23.

Note: Dave Grohl has an existing relationship with CMW, acting as a speaker in 2019.

On February 18, Foo Fighters announce the 10-date 2020 Van Tour that starts on April 12 and end on May 20 in Hamilton.

So, where does that put us?

By our calculations that all means that Foo Fighters will be an hour away from the El Mo on May 20, with an off-day on the 21st, before they headline Boston Calling on Friday the 22nd.

That Thursday, May 21 date also lands right in the middle of Canadian Music Week, when the El Mocambo says it will be open and hosting shows.

Dave also has some kind of relationship with CMW, which can only help get the band booked during the festival at the legendary venue.

We also have to think that Dave has some sort of relationship with the El Mocambo if he’s been wearing a pre-release t-shirt around places like Sundance.

Everything lines up, right?

Here’s the other thing, the El Mocambo’s legacy is built on big names playing their stages. Most legendarily, of course, is the 1977’s Rolling Stones show. And in 2020, we don’t know who else they could get in the world of rock and roll to start a new tradition and legacy that runs parallel to the old one.

So, we aren’t telling fans that they should take the day off and lineup on Spadina waiting for a surprise show on the night of Thursday, May 21. BUT, we are saying that if the El Mocambo is looking to reopen with a big bang, and Foo Fighters are going to stick to their promise of some seriously crazy shit in 2020… this would be the perfect combination.

And we’ll ask you all right now, would there be a bigger club show in Toronto in 2020 than Foo Fighters at the El Mocambo?

We don’t think so.

Stay tuned…
