Black History – Terell Safadi Interview

During the first week of February, I shared Terell Safadi’s song Black History in a New Music Spotlight. As we finish up Black History Month, I wanted to take a moment to dive a little deeper with Terell and this song that really spoke to me.

So we sent Terrel some questions. Check out the video and scroll past to find out more about this captivating and consequential artist.

Q&A

Q: Were you raised in a musical household?
A: I wasn’t raised in a music household as far as musicians but there was always music being played when I was younger. I always had Much Music on the TV.

Q: Can you describe the rap community like in Vancouver for us?
A: The rap community is booming, a lot of artists have their own lane and are coming up, it’s good for all of us, and really exciting.

Q: Who would you say are your biggest influences?
A: Definitely 2pac, biggie, 50 Cent & Future.

Q: Who are you listening to right now?
A: Currently listening to a lot of Saint JHN and Future right now.

Q: Tell us about the writing Black History? Did you have collaborators?
A: I basically heard the beat and it had a sample that caught my ear. I started Conceptualizing and writing. It was definitely a vision I had, no one else was involved really in the writing process

Q: Where did you record and what was the process like?
A: I recorded the record at NOVA studios in Vancouver with Jamie Kuse. We work really well together because we know each other and are comfortable with each other. He added some dope vocal effects and sound effects and killed the mix, really bringing it to life.

Q: Did the idea for the video come later?
A: While I was writing it I was thinking about a video for it and keeping in mind it would be good to tell a story with visuals.

Terell Safadi PromoQ: Can you summarize your message?
A: My message with this song is that a lot of people suffer today all around the world because of their skin colour and a lot of people turn a blind eye to it. It’s going to take learning about the past to understand the present. “ it ain’t about White VS Black, this is is right VS wrong, this is life VS death”

Q: Is there more new music coming?
A: I have some new music coming in March/April 😉

Q: Are there any plans to play in Toronto?
A: Toronto is on my list for this year, it’s one of my top cities on Spotify for listeners!

We also asked Terell if there was anything else he’d like to share with our readers, this was his response, “Make sure you guys follow me on Instagram @terellsafadi and expect some new Fire ASAP. Black History is out now.”

Thanks to Terell for taking the time to answer our questions. We look forward to when he comes through Toronto.
