Artist: Sasha Sloan ft. Sam Hunt
Hometown: Boston, MA / Cedartown, GA
Genre: Alternative
Related: Charlotte Lawrence, bülow, FINNEAS
Song: when was it over?
Notes: Sasha Sloan teaming up with Sam Hunt is the collaboration I didn’t know I was looking for in 2021, but here we are. when was it over? is a heartbreaker. And I think it’s a hit. Both artists shine. Sloan feels emotional. Hunt is in his wheelhouse. This isn’t a ‘get up and dance and sing’ banger – but it’s going to get a lot of plays from people who get it.

Artist: CHVRCHES
Hometown: Glasgow, SCT
Genre: Pop
Related: The Naked And Famous, Broods, MS MR
Song: He Said She Said
Notes: If you are looking for something that’s more likely to make you want to move your body, CHVRCHES gives it to you on He Said She Said. The beat and pop presentation combine to make something that hits – and is a nice backdrop for Lauren Eve Mayberry’s vocals. Oh, and don’t sleep on the lyrics, because Mayberry is going at real-life, not awesome, shitty things that would make any woman feel like she’s losing her mind.

Artist: cleopatrick
Hometown: Cobourg, ON
Genre: Rock
Related: Bleeker, Big Spring, Twin Wild
Song: FAMILY VAN
Notes: Smalltown rockers, cleopatrick are back and rocking with FAMILY VAN. About the song, Luke says, “It’s an exercise in anger, and a conscious acknowledgement of the humble beginnings, independence, and DIY mentality that makes our band what we are.” And ya, you can hear that. These boys keep bringing the heat, and if there’s more to come, we’ll be ready.

Also, if you’re looking for something to help you fill your time, check out FAMILY VAN: THE GAME! Help the band get from Cobourg to their gig in Toronto. It’s silly and fun that’s a win.

Artist: Maggie Szabo
Hometown: Hamilton, ON
Genre: Pop
Related: Delaney Jane, LØLØ, Caroline Kole
Song: My Oh My
Notes: Maggie Szabo’s rise continues and with My Oh My she gets to the pop of it all in a bouncing, moving, ‘make you wanna dance’ kinda way. The Canadian keeps catching more ears with each release, and when clubs are full again and people are ready to pack a dancefloor, a lot of folks are going to dancing to My Oh My and more from Maggie.

Artist: Ben Hudson
Hometown: Uxbridge, ON
Genre: Country
Related: Jade Eagleson, Kris Barclay, Andrew Hyatt
Song: Call Me Karma
Notes: Ben Hudson’s got new music for us now with Call Me Karma and more on the way. The Ontario country artist gives us a fun one this time around. His deep voice is rich. The song has the country vibe we know he loves and strives for. And if there’s more like Call Me Karma on his upcoming album release, he’s going to have some happy fans and some new ones too.

Artist: Michie Mee (ft. Tonya P)
Hometown: Kingston, JM / Toronto, ON
Genre: Hip-Hop / Rap
Related: Kardinal Offishall, Choclair, Saukrates
Song: Made It
Notes: Michie Mee made her comeback in November with the release of Bahdgyal’s Revenge – and now she’s releasing Made It to radio with a brand new music video along with it. Featuring Tonya P, Made It is a reminder of Canada’s hip-hop heritage, and proof that Michie Mee is still here, still talented AF and shouldn’t be forgotten when we talk about original influences and favourites in Canadian music.
