Dylan Scott, Mitchell Tenpenny, Tyler Rich, and Owen Barney at Boots and Hearts 2019 [Photo Review]

With 40 acts spread across two stages and four days, there was no shortage of talent at Boots and Hearts 2019. Hell, there was so much talent that we’ve gathered up our favourite photos from the Main Stage and Front Porch Stage performances of Dylan Scott, Mitchell Tenpenny, Tyler Rich, and Canadian rising star, Owen Barney!

Check out the galleries from each of the four performances and give these country boys a listen if you’re looking to add new music to your favourite playlists.

Enjoy!

Dylan Scott

Dylan Scott made his third trip to Boots and Hearts, landing on the Main Stage for the first time. Armed with new material, favourites from the earliest days of his career, and charisma for days, Dylan did his job well.

Check out Dylan Scott’s brand new album of Keith Whitley covers, An Old Memory now!

Mitchell Tenpenny

Mitchell Tenpenny absolutely owned the Front Porch Stage during his Saturday set. The singer-songwriter was entertaining and funny as he sang and played with the crowd. And whether he was celebrating a stuffed llama making its way to the stage, or casually namedropping Canadian superstar Meghan Patrick (his gf) and dedicating Goner to her, he was doing everything right.

Tyler Rich

Tyler Rich‘s first Boots and Hearts experience was also his very first Canadian show. The California kid hit the Main Stage on Saturday afternoon in a sweet The Glorious Sons t-shirt and with tales of wild chickens and songs like 11:11 ready to share with the crowd. It was his first show in Canada, it won’t be his last.

Owen Barney

Toronto’s Owen Barney took his turn on the Front Porch stage to kick off the Sunday lineup, and he was more than ready. The young singer brought enthusiastic energy to the stage and rolled through his Boots and Hearts debut. Owen’s entire career is sitting in front of him. And with fans that are already screaming his name, songs like Letting Go and Sounds Of Home already connecting with country listeners, the future looks bright.

Drew Baldridge at Boots and Hearts 2019 [Interview]

Drew Baldridge came a long way from home to play his first Canadian show at Boots and Hearts 2019, and it’s one that he will never forget.

The Patoka, Illinois native hit the Front Porch Stage on Friday afternoon to share his music with country music fans and then he took a few minutes to sit down with us to talk about the experience, his music, and his career.

We asked Drew about making the trip north and what it meant to him to play in Canada. He told us that it was a huge deal. He said that he always dreamed of playing music, but never quite like this.

“I always dreamed of playing music. (But) I never dreamed past my county line. Most of the time it was just like, I’m gonna play music for these people. You start doing that and you’re like, I’m gonna play music for Illinois, where I’m from. And then it just grows, you know, and I never dreamed we’d be in Canada playing country music. It’s like a dream come true to be up here.”

Drew told us that it blew his mind to look out into the crowd and see people singing the words to his songs. He admitted that he didn’t know what he was getting himself into when he signed on for the festival. He had no idea if people were going to know who he was or his songs. There hasn’t been any Canadian radio play, but he has had SiriusXM play his single Rebound, and Spotify is there too with his entire catalogue of music so far.

We asked Drew about his influences when he was younger and he rattled off names like Josh Turner, Brooks and Dunn. But he didn’t stop there. He added in Michael Jackson as a big influence on what he wants to do on stage. “It’s not just the singing industry. It’s the entertainment industry,” he told us. And when he and the band get up on stage he wants to entertain people and give them their money’s worth by putting on a show that includes some dancing and fun to go along with the singing. We followed that up by asking who he looks up to now that he’s on the road and doing this for a living and without a moment’s hesitation Drew had Eric Church’s name ready and out of his mouth. He talked about his songwriting, his fans (the best in country music he thinks), and he told us that when they had the chance to play one show with him, he thought he was gonna die.

Our conversation turned to what’s coming next for Drew Baldridge and he told us that it might be a while until he has his second album out, but there is new music. He recently released Middle Of Nowhere Kids and She’s Somebody’s Daughter and is focused on that right now. Middle Of Nowhere Kids is at country radio and Drew wants to put the time and effort in to get spins and make sure that country fans have a chance to hear it. That’s the plan right now, everything else comes after.

We admitted to Drew that we don’t know much about Illinois other than the Cubs, Michael Jordan’s Bulls in the 90s, John Hughes movies, and Rockford native, NBA Champion Toronto Raptor, Fred VanVleet. Because of that, we have no idea what the music scene is like and had to have him what it’s like.

He laid it out like this, Patoka is about five hours south of Chicago, an hour and a half from Kentucky, and only 4 hours from Nashville. The small rural town didn’t have a gas station when he was a kid and it was an hour drive to the nearest mall. So when he heard country music and songs like Brooks and Dunn’s Red Dirt Road, it connected with him. Just like anywhere else, country music is there and like most small rural areas, it’s a popular genre.

Before we wrapped up with Drew, we asked him if he had any big goals for the future. He just got to play the Grand Ole Opry and check that off of his list, but we wanted to know what else he dreams about. He gave us two goals. 1) Play at an award show like the ACMs of CMAs. 2) Have a sign in his hometown saying Home of Drew Baldridge. “I think that would be like, I’ve done it, I’ve made my people proud of me. And that’s what I want. I want my family to be proud of what I do, I want my friends to be proud of what I do, and I think that would be about the biggest checklist I could probably ever get to know that where I come from, I had an impact.”

After working the crowd, singing his songs, and officially introducing himself to Canadian country music fans for the first time, Drew Baldridge had a lot to be proud of himself. It might take a village, but he put a lot of work in himself. We have a feeling we’ll be hearing and seeing a lot more of him in the future. Maybe even on a sign in Patoka, Illinois.

5 Quick Questions with Drew Baldridge

RaeLynn at Boots and Hearts 2019

RaeLynn, the 25-year-old Texas spitfire, made her way to the Boots and Hearts 2019 Main Stage on Saturday to give Canadian country music fans a taste of what she’s got.

With the afternoon sun high in the sky and enthusiastic festival-goers on day three of their musical weekend, RaeLynn brought a sparkle to the stage that set the tone for the rest of the day’s lineup. Songs like God Made Girls, Queens Don’t, and Rowdy had fans singing along and dancing as they looked up at her on the stage and catwalk. Dressed in the festival’s best double-denim Canadian tuxedo, RaeLynn was the complete package in her Boots and Hearts debut.

There were some great moments in the set that stand out and have stuck with us since the show. The first was an emotional highlight as she introduced and sang Love Triangle. The song is heavy and honest has connected with a lot of people in the three years since its release, and it did that again live on Saturday.

The second standout moment was a lot more fun-loving. RaeLynn broke into her unreleased (but already a live favourite) Bra Off with the catchy and clever line, “breaking up with you was like taking my bra off”. A quick Twitter search shows fans asking about the song being recorded and also showing love for it. But that wasn’t all. As the band played and she sang the song, RaeLynn casually threw in some Thank U, Next for the mash-up we didn’t know we needed, but loved completely.

The former member of Team Blake (The Voice, season 2) also worked the stage, dancing and twisting and shaking her hips for the crowd and showing that she’s a lot more than just a stand and sing performer. And that she can back up the sass in her lyrics.

RaeLynn has been in our country music-loving lives for a while now, but we have a feeling we still haven’t seen the best of what she’s got to offer or her peak as an artist. Seeing her live for the first time on Saturday gave us the best idea of what she’s got up her sleeve. And if we were to place a bet, it would be on us seeing and hearing a lot more from RaeLynn in the future.

Morgan Wallen at Boots and Hearts 2019

Morgan Wallen and the 10 Best Minutes at Boots and Hearts 2019

Morgan Wallen showed up at Boots and Hearts on Sunday ready to play for Canadian country music fans. He left with a memory that will last him a lifetime.

Wallen was the final act of the weekend on the Front Porch Stage. The crowd was the biggest we saw at the stage during the festival. The energy was high from the jump. And the Tennessee native took full advantage of it.

There was a lot of singing. A lot of partying. Then there were ten minutes that belong in the Boots and Hearts history books.

After playing a few songs and getting the crowd fully engaged, Morgan Wallen introduced his number-one single, Whiskey Glasses. He offered it up to anyone that’s ever had their heart broken, saying “If you’re like me and you’ve had your heart broken a couple times, I think you might understand this one here. Y’all sing it with me, ok?”.

They went wild. Every single word of the song was sung by thousands of country fans. From start to finish it was one of the most enthusiastic performances on stage and in the audience that we’ve seen at the festival. It’s one of those single song moments that stands out. It’s a huge song that went perfectly. But that wasn’t all that made it special.

After the song ended the crowd got even louder. They gave the kind of cheer that headline acts get at the end of their set to call for an encore. And it just kept going. For ten minutes the Sunday crowd at Boots and Hearts cheered and screamed and chanted for Morgan Wallen as he stood on stage in the middle of his set. He took it all in with a look on his face that showed appreciation, shock, disbelief, and who knows what else. His eyes were wet. His band was smiling. At the side of the stage a group that included Kane Brown, Hardy, MacKenzie Porter, Boots and Hearts co-founder Stan Dunford, and more watched and clapped too. They all knew they were seeing something special.

He showed his excitement for the moment with a cheer and a fist pump of his own. But they didn’t stop. He tried again by raising his red solo cup and taking a long drink. But that didn’t stop them either. Finally, Morgan put the microphone to his mouth and spoke. He thanked them and he promised that this was one of those moments in life he’ll never forget. We believe him.

Check out the introduction, performance, and the first two minutes of the ovation in this video from Charlene Linklater-Trapper. It gave us goosebumps in the moment. It is still amazing to watch on video. In eight years at Boots and Hearts, these ten minutes stand out as one of the most amazing, emotional, magical moments we have ever seen.

Morgan Wallen played a full and dynamic set on Sunday. He gave his dedicated fans and the semi-familiar listeners something to sing and enjoy. He played singles and album cuts and he even brought Hardy out to sing Up Down with him. Ask around and a lot of people who were there will tell you that Morgan Wallen played their favourite set of the festival.

There’s nothing bold or risky about these next predictions, but we’ll give them to you. 1) We’ll see Morgan Wallen at Boots and Hearts again. 2) The next time Morgan Wallen comes to Boots and Hearts, we’ll be seeing him up on the Main Stage.

We look forward to both of those predictions coming true. And when they do, we’ll be there.

Kane Brown at Boots and Hearts 2019 [Photo Review]

Kane Brown debuted at Boots and Hearts on Sunday evening, hitting the Main Stage and playing for an excited crowd of Canadian country music fans.

The What Ifs, Heaven, and Lose It singer has played north of the border before, but this was his first appearance at the festival. It was a big spot for him, with only his set and Jason Aldean’s headlining show left on the schedule. Fans made their way to the main stage and picked their spots in the front and up the hill to the back.

Kane Brown at Boots and Hearts 2019, Sunday Main Stage - shot by Whitney South

The American artist worked the stage, sang his songs, and entertained the crowd throughout his set. He showed the Boots and Hearts audience why his star continues to rise in the industry. And he added his name to a list of performers who played the festival for the first time this year and nailed it.

Don’t be surprised if we see Kane Brown return to B&H in a couple of years with new music to play and new fans cheering for him.

Carly Pearce at Boots and Hearts 2019

Carly Pearce came north to Boots and Hearts and took over the Main Stage on Sunday and with a combination of sweet, sassy, and songs, she left her mark.

The Every Little Thing singer played in the hot afternoon sun, standing above the crowd on the lifted stage and showing them all why she’s one to watch as we prepare to move into a new decade of country music. With a voice that is as smooth as it is captivating, Carly has spent the last two years introducing herself to country fans on radio, streaming, and by touring. On Sunday, she got to introduce herself to Boots and Hearts, telling the crowd that her friends had told her about the festival and she was excited to be there and part of it in 2019.

Carly Pearce played through a set that was heavy on tracks from her debut album, giving fans a chance to sing and dance to the songs they’ve been listening to since its release in October 2017. It was great to see the fans responding to the tracks and having a good time on day four of the festival.

Related: Every Little Thing Album Review

The Kentucky born and raised star added in covers of Shania and Garth to go with her own songs. And as a tease of what’s coming next, Carly played My Heart’s Going Out Of Its Mind which will be featured on her next album. That little taste already has us looking forward to the release. Based on the reaction in the crowd on Sunday afternoon, we aren’t the only ones.

The end of the show gave us back-to-back favourites with her very first number-one hit, Every Little Thing and Top 20 single and fun sing-along song Hide The Wine. Throughout the set, from start to finish, Carly Pearce shared some sassy and silly looks. She shared stories of perseverance. But most of all, she shared her songs and talent and energy with the audience at Boots and Hearts.

Their cheers and enthusiasm told us (and her) that they were happy she made it to play for them. And we feel confident when we say that there are a lot of Canadian country fans that can’t wait to see her come back again.

The Abrams at Boots and Hearts 2019

The Abrams brought a lot of energy and experience to the Boots and Hearts Front Porch Stage on Friday afternoon, exactly as we hoped for and expected.

John and James Abrams are life-long musicians. They started in the business when they were 9 and 11 years old. They played the Opry back in 2005. But now it’s a new chapter, a new vibe, and they shared that with the Canadian country music fans at Boots and Hearts 2019. With a full band behind them and their fiddle and guitar work on display, the boys created a full and rich sound. And as the fans made their way to the stage, things got fun, fast.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

The fourth-generation musicians played a set of songs that had toes tapping and got fans singing along. Their singles like Sounds Good To Me, Champion, and their brand new release, Good Old Days sounded great in front of the eager audience. And when they broke into Fishin’ In The Dark they brought life to every voice under the tent at the Front Porch Stage.

We’ve been looking forward to The Abrams at Boots and Hearts since we presented them as the Country Music Association of Ontario Artist of the Month in April of this year. Everything we were looking forward to, they gave us.

The 2019 CMAO Roots Group of the Year used their Friday set to show everyone that they’ve got a lot going on and a lot of offer. We have a feeling, that even with all of the history these two young men have in their career, there’s a lot more in front of them.

We can’t wait to see it!

MacKenzie Porter at Boots and Hearts 2019

MacKenzie Porter returned to Boots and Hearts on Sunday and entertained the crowd with an energetic mix of original songs and covers.

The last time the Alberta native played the festival was in 2013, but she came back like she never missed a beat. At the tented stage, protected from the afternoon sun, Porter and the fans came together to have a little fun. Her set focused on new music with Drive Thru kicking things off. In the crowd, we could see people singing along which is always a great sign for an artist. On stage, the violin playing country singer looked comfortable and excited.

MacKenzie also looked cool and comfortable on stage, giving attention to the crowd, and putting on a show. She also looked super fashionable, crushing it in her festival season outfit.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

As an early in the day performer that had a five-year gap in her musical career, MacKenzie Porter had a perfect plan for her Sunday set. After starting with Drive Thru and Cry Baby, she broke into a cover of Alanis Morissette’s 1995 classic, Hand In My Pocket. The song is a can’t miss hit with live crowds, and the countrified version that included Porter picking up her violin and playing like the pro she is took it to another level.

Note: We would have loved to hear Misfit Parade or If You Ask Me To. Here’s hoping we do in a longer set the next time we see MacKenzie perform.

From there she alternated originals and covers, wrapping up with a cover of Whitney Houston’s I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me) and her very first number-one single at Canadian country radio, About You. It was a perfect combination of fun-loving singing and dancing and the celebration and excitement that comes with MacKenzie Porter’s huge career accomplishment.

Last fall we spoke to MacKenzie about her new music and what’s coming next. If the plan is still the same, there’s more new music coming, and we can’t wait. We also can’t wait to see her on stage as part of Dean Brody and Dallas Smith’s Friends Don’t Let Friends Tour Alone Tour this fall. If that show is coming to a city near you, get a ticket and get their early to see MacKenzie Porter’s set!

💎 Hand In My Pocket (Alanis Morissette)
💎 These Days

LANCO at Boots and Hearts 2019 [Photo Review]

2019 Academy of Country Music New Group of the Year, LANCO made their Boots and Hearts debut on Saturday, and they made the most of it.

The Nashville-based five-piece country band brought all kinds of energy to the stage. They connected with the Canadian country music fans, and they played a set that had people cheering, singing, and dancing along.

The band played fan favourites from their debut album Hallelujah Nights, added in covers like Mr. Brightside and an Alabama medley of Dixieland Delight and Song Of The South, and included their most recent single Rival, that will be featured on their second album.

Seeing country fans 800 miles north of Nashville singing and dancing to Long Live Tonight, Born To Love You, and the band’s first number-one hit, Greatest Love Story was confirmation that LANCO has already made their mark. Now we just have to see what they do next.

We have a feeling we’ll be seeing LANCO back at the festival again. Until then, have a look at the photos from their set at Boots and Hearts 2019.

Tim Hicks at Boots and Hearts 2019 – Presented by Downtown Orillia

Presented by Downtown Orillia

Canadian country favourite Tim Hicks took over the Boots and Hearts 2019 main stage on Sunday to the delight of thousands of fans who have been following his career for years.

The homegrown star and festival veteran was the featured Canadian artist on the lineup, and he made the most of it. From start to finish, Tim was energetic, entertaining, and put on the kind of show that we and his fans have come to love and expect over the course of his career.

Hicks and the band played through a setlist that included throwbacks to his first album, Throw Down and his first number-one single, What A Song Should Do. The assembled audience was ready for all of it, singing along to the songs they knew and dancing when the beat moved their feet. They cheered when he came out onto the stage. They cheered at the end of songs. They cheered at the end of the set. Honestly, they cheered every chance they got.

Tim Hicks at Boots and Hearts 2019, Sunday Main Stage - shot by Whitney South

As a finalist in the first Boots and Hearts Emerging Artist Showcase in 2012, Tim Hicks has a long and successful relationship with Boots and Hearts. Longtime fans have seen him rise and grow as an artist. He has been on stage in five of the eight years that the festival has been welcomed by the crowd every time.

This year the cheers were as loud as they’ve ever been. The singing was the loudest it has ever been. This was a big show.

Across Canada, Tim Hicks has a great connection with his fans. They wear his hats and t-shirts, they request his songs on country radio. They buy his new albums. They buy concert tickets to see him in city after city after city. And at Boots and Hearts, we saw the culmination of all of that when he played his set. At ten songs long it was enough to get into a groove and enjoy themselves. But we promise you this, that crowd would have been very happy if the set had been twice as long.

New Tattoo started the set and it was a great choice. The energy got up and set the bar for the rest of the show. From there Hicks brought the thunder, things got loud, he raised a little hell and had a good time, and he even showed some love to a Greasy John Deere Cap.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

When it came time for Stronger Beer though, things reached a new level. There aren’t many songs that connect with Canadian country fans the way that Tim Hicks does with Stronger Beer. It’s a sing-along from the first word to the last. It’s a party in and of itself. It’s a moment as much as it is music. We’ve seen Tim perform the song who knows how many times now in venues big and small. And every time it’s great.

It was great again on Sunday!

At Canadian country festivals like Boots and Hearts, it’s easy to concentrate on the big-name American acts that come up to play. This weekend Tim Hicks reminded everyone that we’ve got talent of our own that can play to a big crowd too. We’re glad we were there to see it. We have a feeling that Tim Hicks will be back on the Boots and Hearts main stage again. And when he is, we’ll be there to see that too!

Kip Moore at Boots and Hearts 2019

Kip Moore walked out onto the Boots and Hearts 2019 main stage with a bottle of Jack and instantly had the crowd on his side as he introduced himself to the festival for the first time.

At the same time that the band was getting ready and Kip was getting started, we watched as large groups of people came down the hill to the spot they wanted to see the Georgia native do his thing. Moore and his band started strong with a straight-ahead rock ‘n’ roll approach to their country music. They ripped through Crazy One More Time, Wild Ones, and Plead The Fifth to open the show and they were just getting started.

After the first three songs, Kip Moore looked out on the Canadian country crowd and kept it simple and inspiring, “Alright y’all, it’s time to tear some shit up!”

They may not have needed the encouragement, but they greeted it with a big cheer. From there, things just kept rocking with guitar-driven live music that had hands waving, guys and girls up on shoulders, a few brave crowd surfers, and lots of singing along.

The show was full of songs that the fans who love Kip Moore wanted to hear. They got favourites like Beer Money, Last Shot, Just Another Girl, and Girls Like You. And when they did, they reacted with all of the appreciation and joy that you might expect. The cheers just kept on coming, one song after another, without any sign of slowing down or fatigue. This was Kip Moore appreciation hour at Boots and Hearts.

Note: Kip Moore covering Jimmy Eat World’s The Middle was a purely enjoyable moment that I didn’t expect and didn’t know I wanted until I got it. So good.

Over the years, Moore’s chart success hasn’t matched the ticket sales, streaming numbers, and dedication of his fans. So when we saw thousands of fans loving every minute of the show, we knew it was real. And when we saw and heard them singing along, we knew that it was because they’ve put the time and energy and effort into listening to them enough to know them and love them.

We know that every time we see Kip Moore, fans are going to get nuts for Somethin’ ‘Bout A Truck and Beer Money. They did exactly that at Boots and Hearts. It was loud and happy and everything we love to see.

And when Kip Moore got to The Bull and it was time to wrap things up, he gave it everything he had left and the crowd did the same. Everyone earned their Jack on Saturday night!

Michael Ray at Boots and Hearts 2019 [Photo Review]

Michael Ray closed down the Front Porch Stage at Boots and Hearts on Friday with everything he had in him.

The Kiss You In The Morning singer showed up with a Carly Pearce t-shirt, a smile on his face, and setlist of songs to share. We loved the t-shirt, the smile, and the songs.

Fans sang and cheered for favourites like Think A Little Less and Get To You. But when they started singing along to Ray’s new single, Her World Or Mine it was clear that country fans are in on Michael Ray and ready for whatever he’s ready to release for them next.

Check out the photo set from Friday at Boots and Hearts, and see Michael Ray live for yourself when you get the chance!

Cole Swindell at Boots and Hearts 2019

It took a few years, but Cole Swindell finally made his Boots and Hearts debut on Friday night when he headlined the main stage. The Georgia native started strong and kept it up as and the band played their day-ending set. And while he worked the crowd and gave them everything they wanted, they may have given them more than he expected.

Early in the set, he told the audience that he’d heard stories about Boots and Hearts. He’d seen social media posts showing off the festival. He wanted to see it for himself. Seeing it live and living it up on stage nearly overwhelmed him though, in the best ways.

Cole Swindell at Boots and Hearts 2019, Friday Main Stage - shot by Whitney South

Cole thanked the crowd for the love they showed him right from the start. He also assured them that they were making memories for him that he would never forget by cheering and singing along. It’s easy to be jaded and think it was lip service, but the look on his face told it was the truth. Fans close to the stage saw it for themselves and the rest of the crowd saw it on the big screens, there were tears sitting just behind Cole Swindell’s eyes. The singing back to him, the cheers and excitement, and the sheer size of a Canadian crowd 1,100 miles from home must have been a lot to take in. In a moment of gratitude, he looked out over the audience and said, “Thank you for making it feel like home.”

We don’t blame him for getting a little misty-eyed.

Cole Swindell at Boots and Hearts 2019, Friday Main Stage - shot by Whitney South

On stage, Cole Swindell and the band shared a selection of new music and old favourites. The crowd was into all of it. Whether it was the brand new single Love You Too Late or a number-one singles like Middle Of A Memory and Hope You Get Lonely Tonight, they wanted all of it. It was the perfection of a live crowd connecting with an artist, and the artist connecting with them. And to have it all come together like that on his first trip to Boots and Hearts was fantastic to witness.

Swindell also did his party-host job in the headliner spot with songs like Sounded Good Last Night and Hey Y’all. Feet were moving. Drinks were in the air. The cheers got a little louder. It was a country music party, exactly as planned. What more could you really ask for on a Friday night?

Cole Swindell was a good fit for Boots and Hearts 2019. While we’re sure he wishes he’d been here sooner, it all worked out. And if you’re asking us, we’d have him back again!

Maren Morris at Boots and Hearts 2019

Maren Morris came out onto the Boots and Hearts stage for the first time in her career and played it like it was made for her. The GIRL star fulfilled every hope and expectation we had going into her 19 song set. And whether it was someone’s first time seeing her, or their tenth, we’re sure we all can’t wait to see her again.

There’s this undeniable/ je ne sais quoi/ cool/ sexy/ talented/ sensitive/ sweet/ bad-ass thing that Maren Morris has got going on. Sometimes one or more of those sides come a little more forward, but they are all always there and just the next song away from reminding you that the Texas native is able to make you cry, or get you ready to stand up and fight for what you believe in.

From the opening moments of GIRL, with Maren Morris standing at the back of the stage on a set of stairs, looking out over her crowd, this was her time to shine. All eyes were on her, or the screen showing her, as the songs continued and Morris started to move around the stage and continued the opening segment of her set with The Feels and 80s Mercedes.

Maren Morris at Boots and Hearts 2019, Friday Main Stage - shot by Whitney South

That opening trio of songs set the tone. The energy and excitement were palpable. And the 16 songs that came next continued those feelings without missing a beat or losing anything.

There were some great moments in the show that we didn’t necessarily expect. Ryan Hurd came out to sing All My Favourite People. It was cool and sweet to see the husband/wife duet go down live in front of thousands. Morris also told the story of a male executive telling her that I Could Use A Love Song was a bad choice for a radio single because nobody wants to hear girls sing sad songs. She picked it anyway, and 42 weeks later, it became her first number-one single, and that guy doesn’t have that job anymore.

But the biggest moment was one that we knew we were waiting for, but still weren’t really ready for. When Maren Morris and her band start played My Church and she asked the crowd if they would be her country gospel choir, the place exploded. And they sang loud, and with that unexplainably amazing harmony that comes with putting all of those separate voices together. It was special. We hope it was special for her too.

Here are the simple takeaways from Maren Morris’s Boots and Hearts 2019 set.

♦ She can sing the hell out of a song.
♦ She owns the stage and everyone in the crowd while she’s on it.
♦ Whether it’s a slow song that breaks your heart or a sassy song like Rich, she nails it completely.
♦ She should be a headliner.
♦ We would have listened to a 30 song set if she’d had time to play it.

In all honesty, the entire show was highlights.

During every single song in the set, you could take a glance around you and see people singing along. When the tempo was up, you could see people dancing and having a party. The fans cheered loudly when Maren Morris came onto the stage, and they cheered even louder in appreciation when she finished The Middle and was done.

Before the end of her set, Maren Morris told the Friday night crowd at Boots and Hearts that she hopes she’s back soon. When that happens, she’ll be headlining, and we can’t wait to see it.

The Cadillac Three at Boots and Hearts 2019

All the way from Nashville, TN, The Cadillac Three took over the Boots and Hearts Front Porch Stage on Thursday night for Canadian country music fans.

Over the last few years, The Cadillac Three has become one of our favourite touring country bands. We’ve seen them as openers on big tours, headliners on their own schedule, and even on a small bar stage in Toronto. But until Thursday, we had never seen the boys in festival mode. In all honesty, there wasn’t much difference. Jaren, Neil, and Kelby play hard, they play loud, and the venue doesn’t change how they approach the stage and the show.

In front of a crowd of people ready to party, TC3 wasted no time by easing into their set. Off the top, they rolled out Tennessee and Slide to get things going, and they were all in.

The crowd appreciated it. A look out over the crowd showed girls on shoulders, hands in the air (many holding beers), and all kinds of cheering and jumping and dancing. It was rowdy in all the best ways a concert should be. The energy was up. There was excitement in the air. And The Cadillac Three just kept things going until their time was done.

For 45 minutes, these boys from the south were at home north of the border. The stage was theirs. They owned the audience. It was all exactly what we thought it would be. When we wrote our preview for the festival, we listed five reasons we were excited to see The Cadillac Three. Before the set was over, they checked them all off.

The country fuzz vibes from the band rang through the tented stage area and out onto the crowd in the back. And while it can be hard to hear the crowd singing along over the drums and guitars, we can assure you that Boots and Hearts was singing as loud as they could with the new (Crackin’ Cold Ones With The Boys) and their older favourites like White Lightning.

There were no misses here. Our only wish is that the set had been 20 to 45 minutes longer so we could have heard so more music from The Cadillac Three.

When the set did end with The South, the crowd was the loudest it had been at any time so far. Thousands of country fans sang/screamed the words and gave TC3 the send-off that they not only deserved but earned at the Boots and Hearts 2019 Coors Banquet Kick-Off Party.
