Love, Loss, and Acceptance – Jessica Mitchell Album Preview & Interview

We caught up with Jessica Mitchell on the phone this week to talk about her new album, Heart Of Glass, what went into making it, and what’s coming next.

The Canadian singer-songwriter has become a fan favourite and darling of the community with compliments and praise coming from everyone whenever she comes up in conversation. In the past, we’ve had artists like Amanda Wilkinson who said, “Jessica is one of those talents that’s undeniable the first moment you lay ears on her. A genuine blue-eyed soul singer well beyond her time… She’s a rare gem…”. There are a lot of people that have feelings like that about Jessica Mitchell.

And now she’s wrapping up what she calls a five-year chapter of her life with the release of this album. Some of the songs, she told us, are four or five years old. Some of them are a lot newer, having been written in the last four to six months. And while there are 11 tracks on the album, she told us that it could have easily been 20.

While we were on the phone, we talked about the theme of the album, and she told us that there’s a running connection to love, loss, and acceptance. They are things she’s experienced and lived through. And they are things that she’s written many, many songs about. They are themes that everyone has experience with, which makes this album and these songs feel familiar and accessible.

Our album review is coming next week with the May 11, 2018 release of Heart Of Glass – stay tuned for that.

We also talked about being on the road in front of fans. As we spoke Mitchell told us that she considers herself a touring musician. It’s what she does. And in the last few years, as she’s toured with the likes of Johnny Reid, Ron Sexsmith, Kiefer Sutherland, and Royal Wood and has played festivals including Boots & Hearts and the CNE. She’s been on stages big and small, playing her music, and introducing herself to new fans all over Canada.

And now, with the release of Heart Of Glass, Mitchell has more songs for her live show that fans will have the chance to learn and sing along to. She’s excited about that. And she says that we should stay tuned for more info about upcoming tours later this year.

Fans of Jessica Mitchell were given their first preview of the new album in March when she released two digital singles, Firechaser and Bulletproof. The songs have combined for more than 200,000 plays on Spotify and YouTube, with Bulletproof landing on Spotify’s Wild Country playlist, giving it great exposure to listeners.

Both songs are fantastic representations of what listeners will hear on the full album and this five-year chapter of her life that she talks about.

Throughout our call, it was evident that Jessica Mitchell is excited to share this music with the world. She has been writing and playing and performing for years. And now here we are with a full-length release just a week away.

As far a chapter endings go, this one is hard to beat.
