Control Freak – MONOWHALES EP Review

Toronto’s MONOWHALES have been earning a reputation as a high energy, super entertaining, and talented foursome with their live shows over the last few years. And now, as they prepare to build on that reputation in the summer of 2018, they’ve released a brand new EP, Control Freak to the world.

The six-song EP includes the quartet’s singles Take It Back and Real Love, giving fans a taste of what they already know and love to go along with new music. With the help of producer AL-P (MSTRKRFT), the band has gone ahead and bent the rules of pop, alternative, and rock to make something all their own. And while it may not fit in any one particular box, it’s right there and makes itself easy to grab hold of by music fans of the pop, alternative, and rock verticals.

From the top of Control Freak, things are moving with Take It Back. The single is a bop that allows for a lot of singing along and toe tapping while you listen at home. And it became MONOWHALES highest charting song to date, reaching #25 on the Canadian Alternative Rock Radio charts

From there, things stay hot!

The combination of vocalist Sally Shaar, guitarist Zach Zanardo, keyboardist Holly Jamieson, and drummer Jordan Circosta’s talents works on the EP. They layer on top of each other and allow for the music to shine through. It’s an accomplishment, and it makes for a really fun listen all the way through.

A highlight also needs to be Real Love, the second single from the EP. When we saw the band play the track at CMW there were people dancing and singing along in the crowd. It was a moment. It was awesome. And the song is just as good coming through the speakers at home as it is from the stage.

Trust us.

While we’re throwing light on songs – I want to point out Wrong Way, the sixth track on the EP. It’s got that thing that makes it hard for me to sit still while I listen to it. I like that.

Bonus: While we were chatting with Sally and Jordan before their Canadian Music Week show at The Phoenix Concert Theatre, we played a round of 5 Quick Questions. Check it out and get to know them a little more than you already do.
