New Music Spotlight The Royal Foundry, Mike Plume Band and more

New Music Spotlight 1

New Music from The Royal Foundry, Mike Plume Band, Billie Eilish, Tash Sultana, and Squid Cult

It’s been a little while since I’ve had a chance to put together a New Music Spotlight for you. This past week has brought some interesting stuff to my inbox and I’m happy to share it with you.

Please watch the videos, and if you find something you like, give them some love on their socials.

Let’s do this!

Artist: The Royal Foundry
Hometown: Edmonton, AB
Genre: Electro-Alt-Pop
Related: Attica Riots, Shred Kelly, Dear Rouge
Song: Lost in Your Head
Notes: The newish synthy sounds of The Royal Foundry come to life in this live video for Lost in Your Head. The band is fresh off their win for pop single of the year at the Edmonton Music Awards (All We Have) and they’ve just signed a new distribution deal with UMG who are owned by INgrooves Music Group, under a deal with the US-based indie label and publisher Luna Music Group. The Royal Foundry are headed out on tour across Canada in the fall but they’ve got some summer shows coming up too. You can check out tour dates here.

Artist: Mike Plume
Hometown: Moncton, NB
Genre: Country, Rock, Alt Folk
Related Artists: Corb Lund, Stompin’ Tom Connors, Blue Rodeo
Song: My Old Friend
Notes: Mike Plume has been making music for over 25 years. He’s shared the stage with some of the best-known names in Canadian music including Blue Rodeo, Corb Lund, Steve Earle, The Mavericks and more. Plume has released 12 studio albums and Born by the Radio‘s 9 tracks are rich with stories and Mike thinks he’s done something very right with this album. The video is straight-forward lyric video and it allows the song speak for itself.

Artist: Billie Eilish
Hometown: Los Angeles, CA
Genre: Electropop, alternative
Related Artists: Lorde, Allie X, Halsey
Song: Hostage
Notes: Filmed in Toronto, Billie Eilish’s latest video release is a powerful background for her haunting song Hostage. The video is the product of director Henry Scholfield (Dua Lipa: New Rules, Stromae: Tous Les Memes), and it’s a collaboration and brainchild between Mosaert aka Stromae and Luc Junior Tam, Scholfield and Billie Eilish. The beautiful contemporary dance piece, layered with Billie’s message is a powerful combination.

Artist: Tash Sultana
Hometown: Melbourne, AUS
Genre: Alternative
Related Artists: Methyl Ethel, Holy Holy, Vera Blue
Song: Harvest Love
Notes: Harvest Love is a beautiful video from Tash Sultana’s debut album Flow State which is due out on August 31st on Mom + Pop Music. The video delivers a vulnerable side of Tash that we’re not used to seeing. Artful in it’s black and white delivery, it allows us to focus on Tash, her guitar, and the message. Listen for her falsetto, some vocal runs, and a little bit of growling.

Artist: Squid Cult
Hometown: Los Angeles, CA
Genre: Rock
Related Artists:
Song: Rattlesnake
Notes: Put together in a single day, the video for Rattlesnake is the result of original plans falling through.

“We had a big, elaborate vision for this video. And then everything fell through. We had exactly one day to put something together, so we rented a 1974 Volkswagen The Thing, asked our friends to star, and ran out to Joshua Tree. The resulting romp through human sacrifice, slime, and shaving cream was completely improvised in 20-degree weather. Along the way, we ran out of gas in the middle of the desert, lost a wallet, and probably all caught colds. But the resulting video is something we are all extremely proud of. Luckily, we the best team in the world!”

It’s fun, it’s interesting and I love the way it meshes with the music.
