It’s Really Happening – I’m Getting In Shape!

A while ago (October 2010) I wrote a blog asking for advice as to whether or not I should take up Yoga or Running in an attempt to get into better shape. Iā€™ll be honest. I didnā€™t do either.

However, here we are some 15 months or so later and Iā€™m again looking at getting into shape. The difference this time is that Iā€™ve already started the work.

As youā€™re by now aware because of my consistent tweets and status updates and videos and blogs – Iā€™ve quit smoking, and Iā€™ve been told thatā€™s a good step in the right direction. Iā€™ve also started doing work in small bits that is starting to quickly show results.

In the office weā€™ve got a chin up bar that I use 4 days a week (Mon-Thurs) for no fewer than 15 pulls a day and some day many more. I also swing around the 10lb baseball bat shaped weight which has helped with my muscle stamina and my bat speed (Iā€™m gonna hit bombs this season). At home Iā€™ve been rocking a bunch of push-ups and even grabbed some padded grips/handles from Winners which lower the stress on your wrist and increase the range of motion to better include the chest in each push-up.

And today, for the first time in years (years!) I put on shorts and my running shoes and went outside and actually went for a run. An honest to goodness, one foot in front of the other – no stopping – good pace – heart rate up – run. The loop around my block is almost a perfect kilometre with some downhill to start and uphill on the way back. And I went for it.

Guess what, it hurt! My lungs were on fire when I stopped running. I coughed and hacked and felt like I was going to throw up. And now that itā€™s been a few hours I realize that all that makes me want to do is get better!

Iā€™m not sure how often I will be working a run into my routine. I would like to get to a point where I can be running home from the office which is about 3.3km.

So ya, I havenā€™t had a cigarette in 50 days (#BreakItOff), my arms and chest are already showing results and soon Iā€™ll be burning off some of that unwanted body.

Look out world, Iā€™m gonna be awesome!
